What's Your Favorite Piece of Hunting Gear?

That’s tough. Love my EWO one stick setup as well as my turkey vest setup, bit I often find that I get the most enjoyment out of little things rather than the big things. I’m going to go with the Thermaseat Heat-a-Seat. That thing is wonderful as a tree pad to put your knees into. I would definitely say that it helps me kill more deer because I can sit for hours, never move and stay comfortable the whole sit. I can forget a lot of things and still hunt, but if I forget that, I’m going back for it.
You reminded me I need to add a 1a...my thermacell for early season.

My Knives of Alaska Jaeger. I am simply a lover of knives and have a bunch of them but this one always goes with me on any trip to the woods.

Your tenure is showing. ;)

He said camo cardigan and I had visions of The Righteous Brothers at deer camp!
 LOL!! Yeah, I guess it does date me, but it worked 35 years ago for Roger Rothhaar (who I think was the greatest whitetail hunter ever) and it's always worked for me, and still does. There's not many items of clothing that last as long as Winona Camo nor work as well, in my opinion.

now this is the type of guy that i wish had a youtube channel i could watch. nice deer.

This is a hard one for me. If I had to choose one thing, it would probably be my Beast sticks. I’ve been tempted to change/upgrade/try something different with almost all of my gear at some point, except the Beast sticks. They’re definitely at the “old reliable” status for me now.

Roger's the one that got me started bowhunting. Spent some camps with him. A great friend and awesome bowhunter. Still killing w/his Snuffers.

I’m going to assume things to make it easier on me. As Iv’e spent a lot of years and money accumulating great gear. But, bow, gun, clothing, saddle gear, and pack aside, it’d have to be my bino’s.

My eyes are struggling now and there isn’t anything the docs can do for them. so, for me my bino’s are essential in picking up movement in the shadows, thick brush, etc…. I use them for hours and hours a day when hunting. They are a game changer.

By being reliant on them to give me the edge, they’ve shown me that Using a great pair of bino’s is something that’d make every hunter a far better hunter. To the point I often wander how many animals I’ve missed out on by not using them my whole hunting life.

For me it would be my T&K bino harness. Holds my binos, rangefinder, milk weed, release, light, phone, keys, and bow hanger.

For most hunts I don't need a pack of any kind. Hunting more private now so my bolts, peddles, and drill go in a pocket and the only thing on my saddle is my Doyle's hoist.

That bino harness has streamlined my hunting process more than anything else I've purchased besides my saddle.

You actually know Roger Rothaar? Unbelievable! He's a whitetail hunting legend. I idolized him in my younger days. Come to think of it, I still idolize him :tearsofjoy: In Pursuit of Trophy Whitetails is one of my favorite books. I still have my original copy. A friend I lost long ago would use nothing but Snuffer bh's.

JX3 for sure. Super comfortable and can set it up so many different ways. Allows for me to never have to remove my thermacell. Thermacell is my second favorite necessity here in the south because we mosquitoes year round if it gets warm enough. Which in Mississippi is every other day.

Definitely one of my deer hunting idols….. I have both of his books, In Pursuit of Trophy Whitetails and Whitetail Magic…. Which is still the reason I key on inside and outside corner setups. However, Roger has long since passed away unfortunately.

Homemade deer drag (25+ years old) still going strong, goes on every hunt. Light, strong, simple. Close seconds, Leatherman of some kind (currently the Free P4), Limbuc Extender saw during bow season(carry it right in the quiver), Doyle’s hoist (not pictured).BAD8A22C-BD83-4A7E-AB05-35614B251CE8.jpeg

My dad took me to Roger's house to see his shop @ the age of 12. I thought he was the most awesome guy. All I wanted to do was learn to shoot a bow like him. Shot my first bear w/him in Canada. Went elk hunting w/him in Colorado. Went to Texas w/his son on a pig hunt. Awesome folks. I still kill whitetails w/Snuffers that were seconds that he gave us as kids.

Are these saws still made?!

@Blacksmith
You're very fortunate to have had the opportunity to hunt with Roger Rothhaar. I've met and shot with him and his son at a 3D course in Upper Sandusky, in the early 90s. I drove past his house, when he lived in Oceola, on my way to see Don Assenheimer. I purchased one of Don's Master Hunter recurves in '91 and killed the biggest buck of my life with it, that same year. :) Unfortunately, Roger passed away in 2018 and Don passed away the following year of 2019. :(

I'm not sure about that. They were out of Vermont. I will look to see if there is an actual address on it. You may be able to google "Limbuc Extender Saw." I think there may be a phone number or address right on the arrow shaft. I'll look on my lunch break.

How do you use your drag? Around the neck or up through the bottom of the mouth and over the nose?
