My personal favorite hunting dog is the German Shorthaired Pointer. They are the most versatile breed in my opinion their style and grace are topped by none in my opinion. The only con I could ever complain about is the hyper fits of non stop energy. I operate a small kennel in Illinois and have a great success. I breed for results not $. The dog below is Rooster my male.

That’s a beautiful dog. I do have a GSP as well and agree completely with you. Best dog ever. Not only in the field, but as a family dog as well. Smart, friendly, loyal and happy. I use a golf cart or bicycle to run her tired twice a day when we aren’t out in the field.

In Hawaii everyone mostly hunt with dogs for pig, goat, wild cow. I’ve been working dogs my whole life and used to breed pure oldschool catahoulas out here for ranching and working wild cow out of our herds (shipped my dogs all over to the mainland, outer islands, Guam, and New Zealand).
My working dogs were Aden, Blair, and Salty genetics. I’ve sold most but kept my Aden (silver leopard) and Salty (blue leopard) because they get noses and are super gritty.

For my hunting line I want a dog that has a mean nose, uses their eyes. is fast, gritty, wants to please, listens, and thinks! Keep in mind I usually only hunt with one or two dogs and my 3030 depending on what I’m going after. Goat and deer = 1 dog, big hogs = 2 dogs.

Right now my hunting line is Catahoula x PharoahHound/kelpie/shorthair collie (black dog) which I’ve dubbed “hawaiian mountain cur”. And she is a f***in beast! She knows how to stalk, quiet, fast, mental nose like her grandma, mean eye sight, gritty, blah blah blah. Checks all my boxes and the best part I only need to use her. She knows how to dial down the pressure to not get em to run, she can stop em and spin em and keep em there till I come in with da lead pill.

Dogs in 1st pic are my crew now all from the Silver leopard on da left.

the dogs in the second pic are my Aden (left) and one of her daughters which was salty x Aden (right). Hog dressed 226 no guts! 2 dog action! Yeah I had long hair when I was a young buck!

The closest I've owned to a hunting dog is a golden retriever so I living vicariously through others in my response...

German short hair point is the best bird dog I've seen

Black mouth cur probably the best all around woods dog I've seen

Doggo argentine the best hog dog I've seen

Patterdale terrier best ground dog I've seen

In all honestly some of the gamest I seen where mutts used for bay dogs on hog dogging outings

If I had to choose 1 for "best" hunting dog I pick a black mouth cur from a breeder who actually works their dogs and breed for performance....

But...like I said....I living vicariously

Those mutt bay dogs usually come from the pound so I go out on a limb and say majority of dogs regardless of breed will be good woods dogs if given the chance

Cur would be high on my list if I ever got a dog and wanted a working/hunting one. But I've never met a lab that wouldn't skin himself with a rusty spoon if he thought that was what you wanted him to do.

I just always thought GSP's are the most beautiful and loyal dogs after I watched the one from our neighbor over 40 years ago. Three years ago, I was finally in the situation to get one, train her myself and have the time and space to "play" with her as much as she needs in order to be a happy dog.

I had a GSP and she was an awesome hunter. Very stubborn and never liked my wife, kind of funny back story but way too long.

I trained her myself and she hated whenever anyone missed a bird. She would always stare back at you like WTH.

The only issue I had was she was really rangey... Sometimes out 100 yards. Would have liked her to stay closer. I have a buddy that has a Drathaar it is I think be one of the most versatile breeds out there.

Trying to talk the wife into getting another dog but it german shepherd
Is too much sometimes. Just would love to get the kids into bird hunting...a lot more action than deer.

I’ve had beagles once. They were just a hunting tool. All business. Enjoyed watching them run. But I’ve always had labs for retrieving/pets. Now I got my 1st lab for blood trailing. Best dog I’ve ever had. I swear he understands English. Just aims to please. Won’t leave the yard even if the underground fence is off. Can take him to any camp and he won’t leave the yard. Waiting on you to wake up, then waiting on you to pull back in. He’ll ride the back of the 4 wheeler or truck out the yard. He even stayed on my 4 wheeler for an hour while I scouted once. I hardly put any work into this dog. Just a natural. I swear he understands English. He even try’s to speak to me but his vocal cords don’t work right. Lol. It’s funny. I swear he try’s to say good morning.

Asking what is they best dog is like asking what is the best caliber. Usually the one controlling it.

This question is a tough one and easy one.... pending what you are hunting or doing with them and I am a firm believer that hunting dogs come from good lines but only live up to their potential with good training.

enough BS... I have run labs, GWP and now a drahthaar who is almost two. The labs are the most loyal, the GWP was the best hunter by far and my most personal dog age 13 now, I guide upland and was told time after time by a lot of avid hunters “this is the best hunting dog I have ever hunted over” and the Drahthaar so far is the funnest and hardest hunting with drive that would put most dogs to bed, (although he prefers my wife over me until we are in the field).

Final answer: the best hunting dog is the one that gets you out hunting!

Labs and Boykin spaniels.

I'm convinced my lab is smarter than most folks,, she just can't talk, yet.
