Which carabiners are best....and how to quiet them?

I currently have a few carabiners from EMS(don’t know manufacturer)...and a couple Metolius Element carabiners. Both have screw style locking gates.

Is there a recommended carabiner for the Madrock Safeguard? Can I use the Ropeman 1 with Canyon C-IV rope on my lineman belt?

What are people using to quiet their carabiners? Ive wrapped a few of mine in electrical tape, but tape doesn’t last long. I am considering trying shrink tubing(obv not near the gates). In a perfect world....I’d like to also eliminate(or drastically reduce) the metallic click that carabiners make. I wonder if its even possible without affecting the carabiners ability to positively lock.

As far as the "click" when closing, slow down and manhandle the gate. No reason to aggressively freehand the carabiner onto the loop. Those little ticks, clicks, clanks, will clear the woods for you. You should be handling the gates to screw the gate closed anyway. Practice doing so quietly.

I like the Grivel dual gate line. The Lambda works well with the Safeguard. I think it’s easier and maybe more efficient to vet tape the Safeguard instead of the ‘biner.

Ended up pulling the trigger on a Black Diamond Magnetron. Unfortunately, Safeguard doesn’t arrive til next week. Can’t wait to start learning/practicing rappelling

Update: Magnetron arrived today. A bit larger than I expected, but doable. Has a fatal flaw tho......its nearly impossible to quiet the “click”of the magnets. Going to return it and find a good twist locker Carabiner.

Have you ever tried the Grivel twin gates? Can’t freeze, can’t forget to twist lock them. I love them.

They look they are hard to keep quiet

I understand wanting to be quiet, but I think you might be putting it front and center too much. For me, it is far behind safety and ease of use. Don't do anything to your equipment that could compromise your equipment structurally or functionally or pick the wrong equipment in order to be more quiet.

If I were you, I'd get screw gate carabiners and practice shutting them quietly. I'd then get Stealth Strips and cut them in long strips that are 1/4" wide and then wrap the carabiner body like you are using mini electrical tape. Don't go near inside or outside the gate or the pivot. You can probably get away with stealth stripping the very middle of where you grasp the gate screw.

Ya...I already have a few screw gate carabiners. They occasionally squeak when screwing them closed. My bigger concern is forgetting to lock them...which has happened on a few occasions.
I’m leaning toward a Petzl SM’d auto lock

My favorite is metolius bravo screw lock. They are about as compact and lightweight as you can get for 9.95.

Price is no issue. Spent $30 on the magnetron. Just want piece of mind(auto lock)....and the ability to use it quietly. A screw lock can easily be kept quiet is enough care is used, but it’s the “forgetting to lock it” part I don’t want to experience. I have a brand new Metolius element screw-type that’ll work just fine. Just trying to find an easy to use auto lock at this point.

now I’m just trying to figure out what style/shape works best for the Madrock. Will prob order the Petzl and see how I like it

Auto locking carabiners still require confirmation that they are indeed closed. Of course I have sat a full day and then realize it wasn’t locked when preparing to climb down.

You realized an auto-lock wasn’t locked? Or a manual screw lock?

Have you looked at Petzl screw locks? They have a bright red "safety", so if you can see red, it isn't locked.

Hard to see color in the dark. I’m on stand 60mins before daylight. By screw lock...do you mean twistlock(auto lock?)

My bad, not auto lock, screw gate I suppose is the right term. You have to turn it multiple times.

Ya... I have a handful of those. And I don’t always remember to lock them. I def want an auto lock for my lineman belts cause I clip/I clip them when climbing past branches
