Who works grave shift?

I work 6p-6a and want to talk hunting, especially saddle hunting cause I’m very green and no one at work saddle hunts.

Semi retired now, but in the 1980s I worked 11-7 for years. It was the best shift for being able to hunt every day, and I did.
I remember one year, I would get home from work at 7:15, sleep for about 4 hours, get up, drive 2 hours, be in the stand by 4, hunt till dark, drive 2 hours back home, catch a nap, get up and go do it all over again...every day...work, sleep, drive, hunt, repeat. I was a walking zoombie. I killed my 1st archery buck doing that.

Going back to night shift next Wednesday. I don’t think my ticker is ready for the exponential increase in caffeine. But, I do think night shift gives me more time to hunt. I may be sleepy but at least I’m hunting

Perfect shift to get a good set of headphones and listen to some podcasts. There's a ton out there. A few of my favorites are :
1. Working Class bowhunter
2. Deer hunter Podcast
3. Tethrd
4. Wired to hunt

Yet another reason to hunt with a saddle...you can safely nap in the tree.
Its actually why I bought my 1st saddle. I was having difficulty staying awake in my hang on stands. I figured it was just a matter of time before I fell off the platform.
Saddles rule.

If thats your thing, go for it.
The last thing I want is something that impares my hearing. Man, the things you can miss when you have buds in your ears...deer approaching, rutting activity (grunts, snort wheeze, antlers clicking and clashing), trespasser noise, gear noise that need attention, sound of falling mast, storms approaching, and general sounds of nature. Its stuff we really need to hear.
I've had deer sneak in on me (without buds in my ears) that I never heard coming, until I heard the "popping" sound of them eating cherries or dogwood fruits directly under me. No way I would have heard the crunching of mast if I had a device in my ears.

I'm only scheduled to work nights 7 days a month (unless I work OT, I'm a swing shifter DAM schedule). If I'm feeling good enough in the morning I like getting out to sit for a few hours. This is really nice for the weekday hunts (or first ice perch around here). With a 6p-6a I think mornings would work best for you until you get a day off.

I'm hoping we go to straight shifts at some point because after 10 years of working a different shift every week it's starting to wear on me. Good luck and after awhile you'll get used to shift schedule, or as used to it as you can get lol.

I think he meant while he's at work at night he can pound out the podcasts.

Swing shifter here also. Usually 7 nights (6p-6a) in a month, sometimes more depending on OT. Usually I hunt lazy in the morning after a graveyard; ladder stand ~150 yards behind the house for an hour or 2. Not the most effective, but I have seen deer from it. Unless a monster walks out I'm not shooting on that lack of sleep. The days off is where I catch up though!

Been working 10:30p - 6:30a for the last 7 years. Love the quietness of it, but I def. get tired by the end of the night. Only thing I have found is if I go hunt before work and kill a deer. I either have to go get it the next morning or try to get it gutted, out of the woods, in the truck and home before I have to get to work. That can be a bit tricky depending on the time of year!

Well if any of you guys that are up at 2 am want to talk hunting, hit me up I’m all about it. I’ve got 2 guys here I talk to in the factory but eventually the same stories come up lol

Rotating swing shift mandatory 12s. I try to use the crappy schedule to my advantage. Weekday hunting is the ticket. Since I am used to waking up at 0230, I am usually the first person at the sign in station at the local WMA. I won’t list the negative aspects of the schedule. But you can imagine

9p to 7am for me. 7/70 rotation. I work 7 10 hour shifts in a row, then 7 days off. They call it a Baylor shift here. I am kind of beat during the on weeks, but off weeks are when everyone is jealous. I do imaging at a small rural hospital, so no if nobody is in the emergency room, it leaves lots of podcast listening time.

Looks like there is quite a few of us here in that category tonight at least.

This has always been a tough situation for me. It would have to be a trophy for sure for me to have to hassle with one before heading in to work in the evening. I'm sure I could trade some time with a dayshift guy, but generally I skip evening sits before my nights. Now if the temps are nice and low I would hunt since then I could just gut and hang until the next morning.

Yeah the motivation to hunt in the AM is hard for me. I get out of here at 550 am, sweaty, and small like trash bags( I make trash bags), then try to make it to a stand, don’t spook any deer walking in with heavy legs. Rough

I am zombied out at the end of each shift. Day or night shift. Conditions have to be extremely favorable for me to go straight to the woods from work, but I have done it for deer and turkeys. Those hunts are usually harder on me though, due to fatigue and sleep deprivation.
