Wild edge step mod

Seems most people that ditch the wild edge steps do so because of difficulty tying the knot and getting cammed good. These steps are made of steel, so I can’t find a single reason why the narrow piece you tie on couldn’t be cut off and weld a solid steel rod in its place with a hook coming off one side. If it had a hook, it could be used with a whoopie sling or cam strap like people are using to cam over the LWCG platform that has the little ears coming off of it. Has anyone attempted this or a similar DIY? It would eliminate the need for a knot entirely and could be secured be a cam strap or amsteel whoopie sling.

I think it would work great if you were to sew some loops in a cam strap and girth hitch them around the bar so they are attached at the same points as the rope/knot. I'm kicking around this idea because I love the steps but hate tying them on, its too finicky to tighten and loosen so it will cam correctly.

That’s where I thought if we could figure up a way to replace the cross bar with a heavier duty steel rod welded in that you could use an amsteel whoopie sling and form the loop and bury it around one side, and have a hook on the other side so you could run the whoopie end under and up and around the hook in the same way that the normal knot goes and then cinch it tight and cam over. I may experiment with this.

Thought of same but don't need to cut anything off. Just weld a hook on one side. Also, I did a post on my 1/4" Amsteel whoopie mod you should check out as there is no knot tying at all.

You really wouldn't even have to weld anything on it, that would likely effect packability. All you'd have to do is put a tiny carabiner on a whoopie sling and just clamp it on the cross bar. You could also girth hitch a piece of tubular webbing on it and just hook the carabiner into that. It should work.

I may try this later..
