Writing letters for permission

This is just my experience, YMMV.

In Alabama, your odds of "cold calling" and getting permission are so close to 0 as to not be worth the paper. Everybody either hunts themselves, has kin or friend that is more important than you, or they have enough problem with poaching that the idea of one more person on their property makes them see red.

People don't let strangers hunt their property here, and I suspect that's true in most places. People also don't generally go on dates with or hire total strangers.

There lies the secret. Don't ask strangers. Ask family, friends, coworkers, and church members. If you don't have friends that hunt, make some. It's the only way that particular approach is going to work. It's also a lot more work than churning out letters or knocking on doors.

For me, it's kinda like a private lease or a club. Sounds like heaven until you have to plant the plots, maintain the roads, and (in a club) navigate the politics of it. Then a 45 minute drive to the nearest public where you can show up and just hunt sounds better and better.
People here are trying to lease 40 acres for 1000s a year.

I never ask unless I know them well.

Hell. Sometimes I think I’d pay 1000s for the 40 but you can’t find it here in NC. What is available is all timber company and cutting you main hunting spot seems to be the MO of the logging companies. Hahaha. Ask me how I know.

Going back to public this year.
