From now until Sept. 17th Zoleo is running a promotion of $50 off the cost of the device and a 6 month free membership for GAIA premium($20 value). If you are considering a device for texting outside of cell coverage areas with an SOS button in case you catch the fubar, might want to check it out. I have had one for 3 years now it it has worked flawlessly. Not affiliated in any way with them, just got an email today re: promotion.

I second the recommendation. There is definitely a time gap/delay in messaging but it all depends on the settings. I've used one for 2 years now and I am a fan.

Honestly, the website is your best source for info.

Buy a device, install the app, activate the device, choose a subscription (default for initial activation is 3 months of the unlimited), then text without cell signal. It also works with wi-fi and cell signal.

I timed my initial activation to cover my last hunt of the year (mid-January) so I had coverage mid-OCT through mid-JAN. After that, I dropped my subscription down to "suspended", which allows you to keep the same Zoleo number and email, for $4/month. I'll activate mine again in October and run through mid-January. If I remember correctly, the unlimited is around $50/month.

There is a delay in messaging from person to person, but it isn't horrible. The default setting is that the device pulls and pushes messages every 12 minutes. Worst case delay between you and a hunting partner is 24 minutes. You can adjust the time between "pulls" but I haven't played with it.

I do not believe this delay pertains to the SOS feature but cannot confirm.

What he said^^^. A good bit of my hunting is in areas with no or very limited cell coverage. The device links to the phone with the bluetoof and lets you send text if you need too when you are in an area with no cell signal. I mostly just use it to send the wife a note if I shoot a deer late evening and will be later than normal getting out of the woods. When I had the woops on the mountain in CO last year trying to get away from the yellow jackets and thought I may have broken my leg, I thought I might need to use the sos. It would have been a last resort if I couldnt figure out how to get down the mountain but I was glad I had at the time, just in case.

Of course I just bought an inreach mini2 a few weeks ago but good looking out. These things should be a must-carry for anyone that hunts alone where there's no cell service IMHO.

Would you recommend one over the other?
I don't have enough experience to weigh in, but I got an inreach for the inreach to inreach messaging capability, since my brother already has one. Unlikely that we separate during our hunt, but if we do it's some added safety to be able to message each other. It seems to be from a sending out an SOS standpoint they are all pretty equal so then it comes down to $ where a sale like this helps. And the subscription side/details may differ. I'm using garmin's lowest subscription and will just pay for extra messages if I get in a bind/need to send a bunch.
