Turkey...

My daughter just called me outside to see what landed in our dog pen...

He figured out how to fly out a moment later, before I could put him on a wall.

What a rope!!!

Doesn't anyone bowhunt turkeys. Try it you love it . It's the only way I hunt them. I always wanted a turkey gun and thought about buying one but if I wanted to hunt them with a gun I would use my crossbow. I might have to get them closer for a shot but that's the fun of it.

I’m sure it’s fun but turkeys are one thing that I absolutely LOVE to blast with a shotgun lol. Not sure why but I don’t have much desire to bowhunt them at this point. Maybe after I kill several more I’ll try it.

Me too Flingin. Makes me happy to shoot them in the face. The closer the better.

I'm going to try to shoot some with a 4 inch broadhead to the face! Hopefully I'll have some good video to share.

I'm still trying to get a reaping kill on film with the bow. I still like hunting with the shotgun though. No blind regardless. I hate blinds unless I have my kids.

How big is the property and is there any other land you can get on to scout/listen?
Is there turkey sign around - scratching, tracks or poop? Take a walk around and see what you can come up with. It may just be that it is early (At least where I am from-not sure about the south) and the birds are not that talkative. After watching some of the hunting public’s turkey tour in the south, they had a hard time getting on birds early and they weren’t very vocal.

As far as calling, I never though I was a very good caller either. Keep at it and mix it up. The cadence often times is more important than the pitch. Start off with the volume low and increase volume or change calls and location if nothing responds. Just because you don’t hear then doesn’t mean the aren’t there. Keep at it, have fun and good luck!

The property is only a hundred and sixty Acres. The West border of the property is a very busy highway. To the north is private land. The east is clear-cut Pine Plantation that is nothing but a giant Briar Patch. And to the south is thin cut Pine Plantation, also giant Briar Patch. My buddy who came to try to locate a bird pointed out where turkeys have been scratching and I see turkey tracks all over the property. And of course during deer season I actually see lots of turkeys. I listened again this morning and again more of nothing. I of course cannot make an owl call like my buddy can without a locator call which I seem to have misplaced. But I'm honestly concerned that if I go over there making too much noise that doesn't sound right I'm only going to hurt myself not help myself. I'm not so much concerned about my lack of calling ability I guess as I am about going over there and making a bunch of Racket just trying to locate the birds and making them weary. I assume turkeys react to pressure the same as deer do, or at least in a similar fashion. This morning was warm and foggy and I had to be out the woods by about 8:30. I not even sure what time I should be even expecting them to start waking up. Would the road make them less vocal? Do foggy mornings cause the birds to wake up later? If I can't locate them by them being vocal should I be looking for food sources? If so what would they typically be eating in the spring? new Sprouts of grass and tree seedlings? Insects? Sorry for the excessive questions I promise I'm also trying to find some of this information on my own through the internet also. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here. There seems to be a lot of experienced and successful turkey hunters in one spot. I've also decided that there's no way I'm going to try to take my first bird, if I can even locate one, with a bow. These things are hard enough to find, much less kill.

Man loaded question ‘s........that’s plenty of property to turkey hunt on, though it may not hold them all the time. You could not hear them some mornings even if your a great caller. As far as what they’re eating your spot on. The good thing about spring gobblers is your trying to appeal to their desire to breed not eat. I would grab a slate or crystal call & watch a few YouTube videos & you should be able to replicate a turkey well enough to seal the deal. I’ve seen guys that were poor callers but good woodsmen kill plenty of turkeys. I would shoot one in the face with a shotgun for a few just to see how much you can’t get away with....... then feel free to swap out for a bow. I’d just love for you to get on one & you’ll be hooked!!

Oh btw as for timing in the morning, just get out in the dark try not to use a light, when all the other birds start to wake up so do turkeys. If they roost there you’ll eventually hear them, but on 160 acres maybe they roost nearby & move through. Either way some of my best hunts have been mid & late morning.......

Try a Magnus Bullheads broadheads. They come in 2 3/4 and 3 3/4 inch cut awesome heads. I use their arrows they have 4 five inch feathers on them they fly great. The 2 3/4 shoot dead on out off a crossbow . Head and neck shots only.

Crap man I was in love with that sight until I saw the price it’s almost as much as the shotgun I’d put it on........... looks like it does the job though!

I know they aren’t cheap! Honestly SO well worth it tho. My Auto 5’s were in a completely different league tho...

Man I’ve been trying to kill a bird for five years. I’ve gotten close a bunch of times always been in public land. They are bar none the hardest birds to kill. With that being said spend more time watching them, where they go and if you can put them to bed your gonna be better off. I personally am gonna spend more time this season figuring out where they are and where they are going. Every experienced turkey hunter has told me the sale thing. Get between where they are and where they are going and it will happen. I’ll let ya know if it happens for me. Good luck!

I run a Burris Fast Fire 3. Also a solid sight option. I'm never going back to conventional sights.

It's not that bad. Public land pressure for turkeys is really low in my parts of WI.

When you park here at the public land you may be the only one when you leave there will be 10 other trucks parked there. Lol
