Please expand on that... I have an idea instantly, but most guys are trying to cut weight. A strap with a keeper buckle is a lot heavier than a rope.

Take some 1 inch military grade tubular webbing, and tie it to each side of the jim stepp with the loop hanging down.. . This would at least double the height you could climb per stepp
 
I have one done, but either I need to PDF the tracing and email it c to you tomorrow, or put the actual tracing in the mail. Which works better for you?
