Amsteel Daisy Chain Rope Mod for Climbing Sticks

Tried this with my XOP platform. You can make it work, but the 7/64ths slides over the bark too easy, so it won't stop the platform from rotating on extreme side pressure. I'm going to try this with 1/4" and let you know how it works.

I have some 850 paracord laying around. Do you guys think it would be safe to use in this situation? I have used it for other things and it's a strong rope.

does that mean 850lb breaking strength? No I wouldn't personally, but I'm not an expert. Amsteel in same diameter is probably 10 times stronger.
A stick strap/rope breaking would be the second worst thing to fail next to my tether, but that's 11mm climbing rope.

Yes it's rated at 850lb. Wasn't sure if anyone has done it with paracord before or not.
Having a strap/rope break would not be a fun experience. I agree with you on that one.

I think the biggest problem is that paracord is pretty stretchy.

I agree that it is pretty stretchy. I have used it for suspending hammocks utilizing the same method and it seems to not stretch too much when it is daisy chained up like that. I was just concerned on whether it would hold or not. Guess I could give it a try close to the ground and really put some weight and pressure on it and see how it holds. I think it might be ok once the sticks bite into the tree a little bit, but we will see. Thanks for the input!

I would not use paracord at all. 850 would have a breaking strength of 850 pounds. 3/16 amsteel has a breaking strength of 5400 pounds. This isn't always used with sticks but in climbing the rule is the working load limit is breaking strength/10. So 850 pound breaking strength would have a working load limit of 85 pounds.

Plus you are not going to be to do a daisy chain with it without knots like you can with amsteel and this will further reduce the strength.

Thanks, Red. Just seeing if it was a good idea to pinch pennies. Probably not when it comes to safety...

No problem! Definitely not! You can definitely find something cheaper than amsteel that is sufficient too.

I was a little off on my guestimates, but a 104" rope made a 60" daisy chain with the first 18" of it without links. My new rope started as 144" chunk, and ended at 78" after making the daisy chain. That will get me around trees bigger than what I can reach around.
How big were each loop? I'm making one now and making 3" loops

Mine are right at 3" give or take. I didn't get too scientific with each loop

So really the 7/64ths is to small that is being used? it is 1600 breaking so load would only be 160?

I'm sure it's at the limits, but given the application and friction of stick to tree, not sure if rope sees your total weight.

Most cam buckles are rated way below 1600 and they use them on sticks and tree stands all the time.
