Another of my hobbies and part of my prep for rifle elk hunts is a lot of steel plate shooting at long range. Here's a 16" plate I had at 500 yards this weekend. Shots in my elk camp are often 400 or more.

Anybody else stretch their rifles out?

+1 Have had the interest but a divorce has put the brakes on it for awhile :D. I'm mostly a bow/handgun hunter and don't have an interest in hunting at long ranges but as an avid reloader the precision aspect of reloading for long range shooting is appealing.

I actually prefer bowhunting and I am going too try my hand at pistols this fall, (just bought one of those cva scouts in .44) but when I go back home and hunt with my dad, most of the shots you see are long and usually across a canyon.

I love shooting long range but rarely get to in the WV timber lol. It's fun slinging lead at that distance for sure!

I also have no where to shoot close to that distance around here. Its definitely impressive to be able to shoot that far!

I have to go to a local club. Thankfully the membership is only $100 a year for the range. They have out to 500 there and it is usually not crowded. If I am willing to drive 90 minutes, a friend has a farm where we can shoot 700. That's a long poke!

I don't think I could even see 700 yards lol.

Hunting with a pistol is a hoot and although I haven't shot one I think those CVA's a great value for a hunting pistol. I've looked at their muzzleloader pistol a few times. I mostly hunt with T/C Contenders although I sold almost everything in the last 6-7 months. Just have a 7-30 Waters Improved left to hunt with but planning to order a 357 Maximum barrel this summer since that qualifies for "primitive weapons" in LA

It takes some serious optics. I have a 6-24x50 scope on my rifle.

What brand? That's some magnification!

I have a nikon monarch 3 on there now. It's a couple of years old but has worked great for me. It has the BDC reticle, but I have chosen to use a turret on top instead. It makes the longer shots seem easier. But you have to remember to turn it back down after shooting or it can cause some trouble. I shot an elk across a canyon at 450 a couple of years ago. When I got over there, he was hit good but still standing with the help of a tree he was leaning on. I pulled up my rifle for a final shot but couldn't see a thing through it. I thought maybe my lenses had fogged up but I couldn't seem to fix the problem. It took me forever to figure out that I still had the scope turned up to 24 and was trying to see an elk at 50 yards.

Lol I got a 6-24x50 viper pst vortex. It's still sitting in the box. I put it on my Ar when I got it to check it out. You could see your heart beat. I told my friends at that magnification you can see the world turning. Lol It's awesome but I went back to a 1x red dot scope for that gun. Lol
One day when I can have some where to plink far I'll build a long range gun. Prairie dog hunting would be a blast! I like my trad bows for deer hunting.

I used to shoot rifle long range but since I live in Connecticut its becoming harder to find a place that will let you shoot out past 100yds. So now I shoot bow long range. My local shop host what they call League Night every Thursday. Basically we just shoot a 33 target 3D course, BS and talk about hunting. Well are range now accomadates outwards to 170 yds. Let me tell shoot the bow that distance and its like wow. Just FYI its all for fun and no one plans to make a shot like that in the deer woods. Although there is a guy I shoot with who is just an incredible archer and he shot a 155 inch deer out at 58-60 yds two years ago.

Those Monarch 3's are nice. I bought a gun a while back that had one on it and I really liked it but had to sell it to help pay for the rifle it was sitting on. Right now my 260 has a SWFA SS 12x on it but thinking about upgrading to their 3-15.

It's nice to be able to zoom in for those long shots. I usually have to find the animals at low power then zoom in while watching through the scope. Otherwise it gets too hard to find them

I qualify yearly at 500 with my M4, but not so much with my deer gun. Longest civilian range I have access to is about 200 yards, but if I had an elk trip scheduled knowing shots would be at a longer distance Id figure out how to get on or find a civilian 500 yard range - I enjoy the challenge of calculating windage and elevation

My club has a 200 yard range, not a lot further than that here in CT...we are in the forest in this tiny state.

I like your gong stand Erniepower. I Made a pair of stands similar - the ones I made are fully adjustable and can be used in any terrain possible so the cross beam is always level, the legs are easily replaceable shoul hellen Keller shout out a leg ..they breakdown nicely too
