Base Layers

I use to do this when my hike to my stand was 3.5 miles. I have been contemplating getting a pair and tool dipping them for spot n stalk.
I used some neoprene scuba shoes the other day in the snow, they were low/ankle height so the back of my heel got wet and cold after a few hours, but if you get some higher ones they would be perfect.

These aren't mine but they would be great with wool socks for stalking in the winter.

FYI guys - 20% off your order if you spend more than $50 for the LLBean merino wool pieces right now (20% off everything they sell, really). PLUS get a $10 gift card AND free shipping! You can get the midweight quarter-zip top and the midweight bottoms for less than $100 TYD! That's a really good deal. Like I said before - I love mine. I stopped wearing my under armour coldgear after using merino.

Plus 1 for retiring under armor cold gear after wearing Merino. It was an investment up front but it was worth it. I shopped for deals also and averaged $50 per top or bottom and have mid and heavy weight merino.

I mostly use my UA ColdGear for winter running/biking. Instead of layering it with merino, I'm going to try fleece with merino for extra cold days

Merino wool is great. But I'm transitioning my cold weather wardrobe to Alpaca and Down for layers and scent lok for outer cover, camo and scent control.
I did a quick Google search so I could find an article that explains the benefits of alpaca over merino to share. This is the first one that came up but certainly not the best I've read in the past few years as I've been buying up alpaca. My Alpaca 'long johns' are the most comfortable things I've ever put on. I've warn them against my skin for two straight days and the cold night in between... I wouldn't have wanted anything else on me for those 36-40 hours.

Revised to add second link which is a much more concisely written article about the difference:

Yeah, it ain't cheap! Yet!!!

If we could get it to scale it would. It be as expensive as cashmere because it isn't as expensive to harvest the wool.
And Alpacas can be raised almost any where. So there is a chance that it could scale better some day.

I want to say the long johns I bought were about $150.
Socks I pay maybe as much as $30 for the really heavy pair.

Mountain Warehouse has some good/cheap merino wool base layers. I've always been impressed with the quality of their clothes, tents, and sleeping bags for how little they cost compared to big name outdoors companies.

Bummer the striped ones only come in kid sizes. :D on a serious note, prices seem great. Ive never actually seen merino wool base layers, is there different thicknesses and density?

Yes there are different sizes:
Light
Mid
Heavy

Depends on the manufacturer but generally light is around 190 gm wt , mid is 230-260 gm wt and heavy is around 400.

The heavier ones are typically more expensive but I watch Minus33, WoolX, and first lite on Amazon. Every few months their price drops in half and I try to get mine then.

I have mid and heavy weight top and bottoms and they're better than any synthetic I've ever used.

I have found Mid weight to be the most useful.
That said...lightweight makes a really big difference.

I have minus 33 merino wool heavyweight . I wear a lightweight base layer under it. I love it. I have u.s.m.c. ecw gear heavyweight before it and the wool is better

Wow. Ok, now I am looking at my poodles hair a little closer. It is very close to wool
Lol! We've been talking about using our lasa apso for a sweater for a while now. Every summer when we shave him we get a tall kitchen bag full of wooly fur. Only problem would be his love for rolling around in dear $#!t. He's the one in the back if you couldn't tell. I know he looks small but he's like the clown car off dog fur. ;)

I've seen people spin their own dog hair yarn and knit with it.

I'll stick with my over-priced alpaca, especially if you have a deer poo lover!

What are you talking about? That's a cover scent feature! :p

Oh. good point. save on scent lok and save on alpaca... What's the breed of that dog again?
Lhasa Apso, they're from tibet. I know he's insullated well because it's impossible to get the little bugger inside once it snows.
