Best Pack for Saddle Hunting

I’m looking for a pack to haul lone wolf sticks, a predator platform and maybe an extra layer. How would the tool box work for that? Can sticks be strapped on easily? Platform inside?

I use LW sticks to climb as well. The pack is actually designed to be able to strap on a stand or sticks, and that feature works really great. The predator platform should be able to fit inside - though I have not tested that (mine has not yet arrived!). I have been able to fit my rain gear and heavy cold weather layers inside the pack (though it is tight), plus kill kit, rain gear, food, water, and a few accessories. There are also comprehension straps on the outside of the pack that work for extra layers and likely would work for LW sticks - though I haven't tried that. I use the built in feature of the pack for the sticks because it keeps the weight close to my body.

Check out the end of this youtube video for a demonstration of how the stand/stick carrying system works. It's nifty. .

I just ordered a Pop Up 28 because I found a good deal. Should be plenty enough to store what I need and I’ll be able to pack a deer out with it if I’m luck enough

I use the Sitka tool bucket and like it. Put the predator inside and strap my sticks to the back of the pack. Still plenty of room for binos, etc. inside. I removed all the buckles and straps from inside the "frame" to cut some weight. I never used them once to carry my lone wolf in, IMO it was just too many extra steps. It's nice to not have to zip the pack up as well.

Where did you find a popup 28? I keep seeing them as out of stock.

It’s out of stock but I may have sweet talked a store into giving me a close out price for when they’ve got them back in stock. Won’t have it for a month or two probably.

I like external frame packs and picked up my first M.R. I got the mule. I haven't used it hunting yet but like the idea of a fairly small pack with the option of expansion between the pack and frame. I've been out playing with it and put my LW hand climber in between. I like this pack a lot.

In the last two years I’ve been on a mission to find the absolute best pack I could find for my style of hunting. I’ve been through several different packs. I tried cheap backs and of course that didn’t work out. I’ve tried both Sitka packs and hated them. Sitka makes great clothing but they need to leave the pack making to folks who know how to build a pack. I used a MR Pintler most all of last season and really liked it a lot other than it was a little large for a whitetail day pack. In the past couple of months I picked up a SG Avail and a MR Pop Up 28. I can’t see a pack being any better for what we do than the MR 28. It will easily pack sticks and a platform or sticks and a lock on and still leave room for layers for late season. Yet it’s small enough that it’s fine for early season. The pop up frame feature gives you the load hauling ability to quarter out a deer and get it out of the woods comfortably. It’s a winner

So Im trying to figure out which pack is going to work best for my set up this year. The MR Pop Up 28 gets much love here. Obviously its a high quality pack but are you guys mainly liking this pack for its ability to pack out your meat? Gonna have to check and make sure but I do not believe we are allowed to clean our deer in the woods here. Is the Pop Up 28 a bit large if your not packing out the deer?

If you’re packing out you’re probably storing the meat between the bag and frame. So the bag itself should still be an acceptable size. I’d just assume you’d use the load hauling feature for stand/sticks/clothes

Gotcha... thank you

It just might be overkill if you’re never gonna pack out with it. At least that’s my impression. I wouldn’t be getting it if it wasn’t for wanting to start quartering deer. I’ve been lucky enough the past couple seasons to get sick of mile long drags

I don't plan on packing meat out. I like the MRPU28 for the ability to haul my gear close to my body and securely between the pack and frame.

I found a few of the MR28 packs on optics planet. Pulled the trigger. I’ll do a review here once it arrives...

I used the MR pop up 18 all season and worked well for me. Yes the 28 has more space in the pack but the 18 forced me to choose what I really needed to carry. Definitely helped me realize what items were wasting space and adding unwanted weight!

What would be the best way to haul four full length LW sticks and a predator platform in the MR pop up? I don’t think the sticks would go in the meat hauling area without sticking up too high. There isn’t any compression straps on the back. Could they go along the sides. Maybe two on each side and the predator in the meat shelf? I’ve looked at other packs and I’d like to avoid putting the predator inside a pack with clothes. Trying to avoid buying multiple packs and messing with returning ones that don’t work. Thanks for all your help everyone!
