Fleece Saddles - Thanks Just Some Dude and Sam potter!!!!

I would not think 3/8 inch rope would work well. Did you fold up the saddle as in the videos? I tried Amsteel and I had no slippage at all. The key is to form a mass of fabric at the end so the rope wont slip. Personally I am going to use the 7/16 Amsteel as it bites best to date and it is plenty strong enough for a hunting saddle. But keep in mind I use a RCH for a fall restraint device.
My bad, this stuff is 1/4". I guess I'm not used to looking at ropes to tell the diff without measuring it. At any rate, I'll keep working at it.

I did the sewn channel, 3 stiches with heavy duty outdoor thread. Seems just fine, I am going to make the smaller one soon, I just used 550 cord because that's what I had, although I needed to shorten the loops. Also using a RCH.

I am getting a little pressure on the back of my legs, might have it on upside down, other than that, it's pretty comfortable.

I’d still tie the bridge like Dave. All your weight is on those stitches. Having it hemmed and a paracord through it will add bulk to aid Dave’s knot system. I wouldn’t want to count on my hem to hold me.

Donnie I could be completely off base here and feel free to correct me if I am. It looks like you have the cord passed through the channel sewed into your fleece attached directly to your bridge. Is that correct?

If so I think that’s a little dangerous and not what was intended by the people who were demonstrating their builds. Their intent was to use the cord through the channel to cinch up the end of the fleece only. Then wrap the amsteel around the entire bunched up end to attach to the bridge.

See my poor drawing below.

I'll have to double check, I thought that was just another form of the "whipped end" but we probably need one of the hammock experts to chime in. The 550 cord does go through the channel to a biner making my bridge. I thought that was why it called for a triple stitch. I'll run through the original thread again when I get some more time. Regardless I have my rock climbing harness on and I kept tension on it like @justsomedude recommended. Thanks for the backup.

5:35 in the video he talks about the channel version. Has anyone else done this type of hammock? Seems fine to me, but if it's prone to failure then I will probably just whip the end together.

What's the breaking point of that 550 cord?

He does not really demonstrate the other method. He just talks about it. I would be leary of it unless I could see what he means. Looks like you would be hanging by three rows of thread. Not real good for my confidence. .

I think the whipping method is better for this application than the channel method.

The way Dave demonstrates it will work. You could also whip the ends with a small cord like this. This technique would work perfectly for this application.

Cool thanks, easy enough!

I have a few hammocks and one hammock ties off exactly like your saddle. It holds. But if I’m way up a tree, I’d feel safer not counting on stitches if I could just as easily have a rope securing me.

Rock Climbing Harness.

Always so I guess it really doesn’t matter. But who wants their saddle to rip and you fall even if it’s 3 inches. Sometimes I fall asleep and my knee buckles and that’s scary enough! Lol
Might as well make the hammock as secure as possible. As a group we will eventually figure out which way that is. I am sure the Sam Potter way works. He is alive to tell us about his big buck this fall.

10 kN on the gear loops, 16 kN on the belay and haul loops

6.6 kN on the leg loops (if you have any bone head ideas )

Shop around. I have two of them. I got them for a little over 60 US each. I use them for rock climbing as well. Great all around harness.

Where did you find that harness for $60?

No where in particular. Moosejaw, Campsaver, Backcountry Gear, etc. have all treated me well. Usually requires an initial discount plus a promo code to get down to bargain price.

Yes indeed. I wouldn't ever use my hammock seat without a RC harness. I'm not so much afraid of the material failing as I would be of simply slipping out of. I've never had any hints of either happening, but I want to hunt tomorrow and the next day too.

Rather than Whipping the ends, you can just fold it over and use a Double Sheet Bend Knot. Solid, and no need to build loops into the ends of your bridge. Might be a bit bulkier though. I'm still going to try Dave's knot with my rope when it comes.
Did I miss the name of that Knot that DaveT used?

So if I want to make a bridge for a fleece saddle and I want to splice in loops large enough to make the girth hitch that DaveT shows in his video, one on each end of the bridge for tying into the fleece material, how much 1/4" Amsteel should I order? How much length of rope will it use up to make the splice and how large of a loop do I need to be able to make a big enough girth hitch to go around my folded up fleece, and still end up with a 24"-30" bridge?

Waiting to hear this answer as well.... I have my fleece, I am just trying to figure out what option I want to go with on the ends and how much rope I will need before I begin to order the amsteel. I have one piece of amsteel about 6' but I don't think thats going to be long enough.

Nope. It won't be. Nobody has picked up on this question.
