Fleece Saddles - Thanks Just Some Dude and Sam potter!!!!

Nope. It won't be. Nobody has picked up on this question.

There is no right answer. All depends on how long your fleece is, how wide you are and what you like. get some paracord and experiment until you find what you like. Then get your amsteel a few foot longer to make the splices.

How big should those loops be to make the knot you demonstrated? I can do it with paracord pretty easily but it's way different with 1/4" Amsteel. Also, how much rope do I need to bury inside the rope to make a secure loop? I think Red Squirrel said 11" or something? I don't remember where I saw that.

I think I bury mine as it 8 inches. I don't use my saddle as a fall restraint device as with a locker brummel I am not really worried about it slipping out.

Good news for the DIY's. Not sure if you remember the outrageous shipping cost that Camo Fabric Depot had that forced several of us to cancel orders, well I sent them an email and come to find out they were having a problem with the website. They also just added a flat rate shipping option. I was able to get several yards of "RealTree Extra" Fleece and some camo ripstop nylon for another project for only 10 in shipping. Oh and a lot of the fleece is on sale.

Excellent! I have some on its way, I can’t wait to try this.

By the way what’s your beer of choice?

Did we determine if this makes a difference?
I think it makes a huge difference, the amount of stretch in one direction is significant.

As long as you put the stretchy direction 90 degrees to the tied/whipped ends it doesn't stretch that much. I might make one the other way to compare, will give us some actual data to compare.

Do you want it to stretch or not? Does the fact it stretches make it more comfortable? If not, could you make the saddle two layers and put the layers together 90 degrees to each other? I Plan on ordering some fleece to play with this idea soon.

That's a good point, I don't know we will have to test it out. Guess that's another reason to make one the other way.

I've done it both ways but the smaller Amsteel bites better. You could just as easy use the 1/4 inch bridge with two fixed loops and bypass using the smaller continuous loops

Not using a soft shackle this method is so simple it is silly and works better then a simple girth hitch. I am sure others have done it I simply call it a double girth hitch which can be made in a fixed loop solving the age old question how do I attach the second bridge loop w/o a carbineer.

Dave T, I’ve bought the fleece and tested it with paracord and it works great. I just received my 7/64 Amsteel but I now can’t figure out how you tied the loops in the ends of the Amsteel that you attach to the fleece. Can you please explain that?

Ah heck! I thought it looked like you had a bridge made up with loops tied on each end of the bridge that you were looping about the fleece? Is that not what you were demonstrating there?

Man I really did not want to start making all these splices as I’m going to make several of these for my boys and I. I’ll end up splicing for days. Can I not just tie a loop on each end of the Amsteel to make a bridge the ties on to the ends of the fleece?

It is not recommended to tie knots in amsteel. It is too slick of rope.

You can do locked loops in both ends.... there are videos on YouTube to show how to do it.

Yes I believe the technical name is a dogbone - I just call it amsteel with two fixed loops. To tell you the truth I don't even remember? I think it was just a piece of amsteel I had laying around that I had spliced loops on the end.
