In his bedroom - UPDATE (help)

any pictures of hair you found at shot site?

blood found at shot site?
Didn’t find blood/hair but it was maybe 5-6 yards away from site of shot in direction he was running

Where was the blood at you posted originally with the broadhead photo. I thought that was shot sight, was it not?

Also looked for arrow again and couldn’t find it which makes me think he’s either dead/going to die.

I don't understand this assumption. Deer have been seen walking around with arrows stuck in them doing perfectly fine and arrows can passthrough deer and be unrecovered and the deer can still live. Sorry but no one knows where you hit or how in the world the insert came out of the shaft and honestly arrows are hard to find. Just because you haven't found it doesn't mean it's not laying 10 yards away from where you shot. My thought/hope is that you hit high and just got meat. Definitely keep an eye out for birds for the next few days but hopefully you spot him again soon.

I would get another dog out there for another try and if nothing turns up call it. Been there and its gut wrenching. Only thing you can do is keep at it and hope he shows back up.

My assumption is that if the arrow is in the body cavity, not just embedded in muscle, then he will more than likely die due to that. I agree if it’s lodged in muscle then he’ll be fine.

Go tomorrow morning again, early, when everything is quiet right at sunrise, shut your truck off and get out and listen, if that buck is dead you will here crows and ravens… it has been over a day, they will be on it by now, if you can sneak into them taking note of exactly where they are, and you will find that buck if he is dead, don’t run right into them, watch for a minute first, there will be a few in trees, pay attention to the ones flying straight down out of the trees, there will be your buck.

I was able to get back and look yesterday on break between shifts. He’s alive, the hit was mid body, about where I thought but too high. From what I could tell 3” or so below the spine. Hoping for another opportunity at this guy

What’s in the picture you posted?

Can you post a picture of where you hit him? Like a computer picture and you draw a dot.

Yes I can, in that picture is the deer. He’s facing the camera in the middle, just his head and antlers showing

Way to stay after it. Did you bump him out of a bed to get that pic?

he was bedded yeah but didn’t bust out only stood up and walked around to get a better look at me. Once I confirmed it was him I backed out to not push him any more. He was on the edge of the field across that Main Street, but on the northern side. I measured the distance from shot to there and it was 0.4 miles.

kyler - from a broadside view that I had of him, this is where the wound was - again he was hard quartering away head was probably at 10 o’clock at time of shot, 9-10 yards away and I was probably 14-15’ in air.

I’m pretty sure you went over his spine given your recollection of the shot angle, your depiction of where you hit, and that he’s still alive.

I shot a mule deer this year that I was 100% convinced by the sound of the impact, and the deer hunched over looking like he was about to tip over as he walked into the brush, I had smoked and he was dead. I didn’t - I hit him where your x is. Above his spine, and likely cracked a couple spinal processes, and giving him a little nerve damage. Had three more opportunities at the deer in the coming days. Sent another arrow through his brisket, buddy missed him, and I stalked to within 25 yards before he winded me. Another group of hunters got a shot at him and missed.

If you hit the deer at that location, from an elevated position, and he was hard quartering, and you found your broadhead and insert on the ground, and that broadhead was razor sharp upon entrance, and he’s alive today, I would bet a lot of money the arrow didn’t pass under his spine.

Solid theory! Assuming the arrow was still in him was what kept throwing me. But the fact that the insert /broadhead were out makes sense if it hit something hard & didn’t penetrate the cavity

I agree, you probably went over the spine with where you think you hit. If you hit anywhere in the body cavity between the legs he would have been dead by the time you saw him. Get back out there and shoot him. He'll be on his feet chasing does soon.
