Learned a lot in my 1st sit in my sit drag

Well tonight's hunt was interesting.. it was my first hunt from my sit drag, first hunt with the one stick method, and I learned a few things. First, I've one sticked in my yard a handful of times. It's surprisingly easy. But that's on a straight 10" dia pine. I used my homebrew stick I made, with 2 step aider I made, use the top of my stick and a homebrew stepp as a platform, everything worked flawlessly at home. Well tonight, I climbed a majorly crooked oak with limbs about every 6'. Took me almost an hour to climb to about 16'. I got there and said to heck with it, that's where I'm hunting, too tired to fight it anymore. I learned that a couple ropeman's are in my near future. Prussiks get way to tight when hanging from them. I learned that a 2 step aider on a crooked tree is NOT for me! After cussing under my breath about about the climb, as soon as I get situated in my sit drag, using a limb, sticks, and homebrew stepp as a platform(of course not at the same height) I figured the hunt would suck. Well before I even got my release on, there is a doe about 15yds from me and never knows I'm there. I'm dancing and struggling, and she's just eating acorns like nothing ha. Well since I don't get much time to hunt these days I wasn't passing on her, I managed to get in an extremely uncomfortable and sketchy position and take the shot, doe is down. So after an hour climb and a 2 minute sit, it's time to make the decent. After thinking I died about 7 times, I got my feet on the ground. Drug her about 100yds and went for the truck. Now I'm crazy tired, but really happy ha. I do know, I'll shorten my aider to 1 step, get a couple ropemans, and practice some on some gnarly trees, and I should be good for the next time haha

Awesome. That’s about how my first hunt went. I still have nightmares about it. All problems and dead doe. Lol
Congrats

So... Your first time out and you had a deer down after a 2 minute sit...sounds like a fantastic hunt to me! Lol!

Sent from my Galaxy S8.

The hunt ended up great, I got to the tree at 2:45, and had a 30 min ride home and still had her skinned and on ice before dark haha

Ha that's a perfect way to describe it, all problems and a dead doe haha. And tomorrow my legs will probably be sore because of standing on one foot so much while fighting the tree so much

My last Tree fight the inside of my legs hurt. I don’t know why? I tried to climb a hard barked tree one stick and aider and it whipped my arse!! Kept sliding and shifting I was scared to go up or down about half way through that climb. Lol

Congrats again in the successful hunt

Nice!

But yes....a 2 minute climb and a 1 hour sit would have been better. You should consider a long tether and an ATC rappel device next

Yeah I debated for about .04 seconds about not shooting just because I had just gotten there and wasn't really ready to do that climb again. I dunno about the whole repelling thing, I'm still trying to figure out everything else right now haha, maybe next year I will give it a whirl

Maybe the next couple hunts I will pick a little straighter tree with a few less limbs. I also think I would like probably 2 sticks, so I can eliminate some of the hassle climbing. I haven't measured my bridge, just eyeballed it when I tied it. My carabiner sits about chin high when leaning(I'm 5'8" if that helps) and my tether was tied about forehead high while standing upright. How long do y'all usually have your prussik from the tree? Mine ended up being about 4-6" tether from the tree to the prussik. Is that enough or too much. It seemed pretty comfortable, but the longest I've spent in it is about 30 min in the yard. I never noticed hip pinch, and not TOO much restriction on getting around the tree, but again, I haven't had a "real" test yet.

Good job Hailey!!!!! You should probably just go ahead and get some tree spurs and forget about all those other climbing methods.

Thanks! Well unfortunately I hunt public so they aren't allowed, but I was sure wanting some spurs this afternoon ha

Good thing the doe waited 2 minutes to come in so you could catch your breath.

Haha yeah, she was very considerate. After the climb, decent, and drag yesterday, I've come to realize I'm not nearly in the shape I thought. My legs hate me today haha

Congrats on your first saddle deer at least!

Thanks! It was interesting to say the least, I'm right handed and I shot at the 6 o'clock position, a position I clearly haven't practiced from yet ha. I had my left foot on top of my stick(which was about 9 o'clock), right shin against the tree because there was nothing for it to rest on, right buttcheck against the limb behind me, and I had an awful urge that I was gonna roll out of the sit drag, but I didn't! Haha

I have a thin 1" webbing strap and a sliding pad from an Ogio duffel bag shoulder strap that I had rigged up for a back support. I didn't get a chance to get it on before the shot, but I'm willing to bet if I would've had that back support strap on I wouldn't have had the feeling of nothing holding me. I just need to get more hints in with everything to get real comfortable the feeling of not being on a stand platform.
