Live from the tree 2017 version

My hunting partner getting a little rest. Opening day of gun season in DE. Second year of hopefully very many that she will be sitting with Dad.

Poooo lawd, I feel the grey hairs sprouting. Got all 3 sons in the ground blind. 12, 9, and 7 years old. Talk about an ordeal getting them dressed. My youngest, Ethan is up to bat to try and kill his 1st deer. It’s gonna be a miracle if there is still a deer in the county after trying to get all settled in. Can’t wait for momma to get off work. I need a relief!!!

Watching deer a 100 yards off and he says the red dot covers the whole deer and don’t want to shoot so we just watching. Can’t force him. He just isn’t ready I guess. My oldest is chomping at the bit, let me shoot, let me shoot! Lol. I said no this is Ethan’s Hunt. Just letting him practice holding the red dot on them.

Just had a nice 8 come through BARELY out of range.
I had a tree prepped that I could have shot him from, but the wind was predicted to be wrong for it this morning. Almost had 13 points on the board for team 1

Three boys = one girl....lol. Seriously though, kids do add an easy 30 minutes to the prep time.

Grabbing a sandwich and dropping her off before Dad goes back and gets serious. Little eagle eye picked up a doe moving through the brush when I pulled my camera. We got to watch her pass at 30 yards. Decided not to shoot based on it being kinda small. My daughters thinking "little" and Daddy's thinking "yum".

The 8 point from this morning just came through chasing a doe HARD. They got to within 60 yards before she turned north and drug him away. Hopefully she will about face and drag him back through. And, unlike this morning, I’m in my sit drag, so the points would have counted!

Shot what I thought was a doe tonight. Ended up being a button buck. Was hunting from the ground.... Freezer filling up! I try to put 5 or 6 deer a year in. My wife enjoys venison so we buy hardly any beef.

Shot AT a doe tonight. Missed her clean over her back. Her and 2 others make their way to the property owners back yard while I sit and curse myself.

All of a sudden they blow out of the yard and come back to my field. The lead doe comes into 15 yards and I didn't miss this time.

Going back in the morning to get her out as the shot was a little back.

My tree this evening.

I had an EXTREMELY active sit. I figured it would be a bust because there were commercial pecan harvesters in shaking trees and vacuuming up the pecans all over two properties. But, The 8-pointer from this morning came through about 20 minutes after they left (from right where they were working) pushing a doe hard. They came close to being in range, but disappeared to the north of me. About an hour and a half later, they show up running across the creek from me. He chased her in circles around a small briar patch at the edge of the creek for half an hour before she gave in and let him breed. They stayed there (45-50 yards out) until another doe showed up and he eased his way toward her. Right at last light he was around 40 yards, broadside and in the open. That is just too far for me in low light conditions.
It was really fun having all that chasing going on around me for 45-50 minutes.
Here’s a pic of him from a few nights ago. Not near as big as two others in the area, but definitely a shooter after 2 dry seasons.

Also, right after he bred her, there were two does and a hound 6-point chasing on the opposite side of me as well. Then, on the drive out I almost hit a small 8 that was chasing a doe. The rut is officially on!

Had an all day sit. Good stuff overall. Early I had a spike and a button buck come hang out with me for a bit. Then I had a doe at 14 yards with a good broadside shot but her goody basket was covered with a few branches. She must have sat like that for 10 minutes. Sure felt like it. After my two bad hits this year I wasn't willing to risk it.

Then at last light I had a doe come by. I thought she was going to give me a perfect broadside shot at 18 yards or so but when she got in the opening she turned towards my tree. I had been at full draw for so long waiting because she was moving so slowly, I eventually had to let down and she heard me. She had moved behind me and I didn't have a good angle.

Frustrating. But rifle season starts tomorrow. Hopefully I can put one in the freezer and get my team some points.

A side note is this was my first rappel down in the dark. Pretty nerve wracking but I felt super cool when all was well and doing it with the green headlamp.

Found the doe. She wasn't 30 yards past where I stopped my search last night. I believe a bobcat found her over night as she was partially covered in leaves/moss and her back ham was partially eaten.

No saddle in the pic but it's my second from a saddle and first from my GW.
