Nice effort Ricky, hate you didn't get him.Well, its 9:30 pm and I just got in from the woods. This evening I got a shot at a small (100") 8 pt. just as it was getting dark. He was close enough for what should have been an easy shot but I executed the shot poorly. I had to shoot from my weak side but that's no excuse. I thought I missed. In the low light I couldn't see the arrow and the loud crack I heard made my think I hit a tree.
The buck ran about 50 yards and stood there for a bit. With the 4" of snow it was possible to see the bucks silhouette. He started walking, circling around behind me. He stayed 40 or 50 yards from me but I noticed he was limping as he walked. When he got directly behind me he laid down. After a few minutes he got up and moved and I couldn't see him anymore. I waited a little while then slipped out as quietly as I could.
When I got back to the house I told my wife that I was going to wait an hour or so and go see if I could find him. She said she was a little hungry so we went to get a quick bite.
When we got home, I hopped on the tractor and headed back to the woods to look for him. I found half of my arrow and sparse blood trail. I walked over to where he laid down and found a bloody bed then another bed about 8 feet away. From that bed I followed tracks but there was no more blood. The tracks lead to the field south of the woods then it looks like he trotted across the field. The location of the blood in the bed confirmed he was hit in the left front leg.
It's disappointing to loose a deer. I'll bet it's been 15 years or more since I've hit a deer and not put a tag on it. Bummer....
Perfect hunt no matter what happens.
