New from Chesapeake VA

Give me a buzz when season starts. I may be able to help you locate a few deers there
Would I have to do anything special to get on there with Riley? I haven't had any tracks on AP yet but I know Quantico is pretty layed back about it. Don't think I even showed ID this past time.

I'm not sure. Let's see if there's somebody we can talk to about it.

I've never been. I've thought about Quantico a few times. Some rules are just too strict though. If you shoot a deer at dusk with a bow chances are you're leaving it until the morning because you have to be out and hr after shooting light. That's my walk in more then likely. Yotes would have deer chewed next morning, so the deer died for nothing. Is that a problem on AP? The yotes and time restriction?

There’s a time limit to be logged out but I was under the impression you can call and get more time but I’m new enough that my answer is I just don’t know as I haven’t been in that situation yet. I’ll admit I was intimated enough by the regs that I avoided the place for years until I met someone who sorta walked me through the initial getting on part.

Yeah before I worked for myself I had a guy I used to work with try to get me into Quantico and was gonna show me the ropes. I stressed myself out and had dreamed up this image of me in jail on base for taking a doe that had busted me and I decided to back out

Haha. Yeah it's not that bad. Actually my interactions with the game wardens have been good. They will let you stay for awhile longer after checkout (2-2.5hrs) if you are already on blood. Just have to call in a and check with them and then give periodic updates.

Joined a few weeks ago. I have read and read and read and watched more videos than I care to admit. Just purchased a Overwatch Transformer saddle and an EDP platform. Already had various sticks. Will do an initial hang tomorrow. I am excited to give this a try. Hope it works out for me.. Ive got 8 months to make it a go.
Welcome and good luck from NH

Recoveringwithcurs, I think you would be able to get your tracking dog on as long as you have access. Set up an account in Fort AP Hill Isportsman. Once you complete that process you should be good to go. My buddy with permission from the wildlife branch had a guy come on in 2022 to do a track. Never found deer but the dog was young with little experience. Basically in training. I saw the buck about a month later. Had a limp but seemed fine otherwise. Bruiser buck. I would definitely like to have someone in that area available. Of course, I have to shoot them to need to find them :anguished:. My buddies all say I'm the best deer watcher they know. Maybe this year I'll shoot one from the saddle.

I'll have to get on top of that! If you need a dog by all means contact me. I have 2 black mouth curs with one more on the way. The new one is gonna be our squirrel dog. Riley is my proven recovery dog. My male is in training still but that's only because he's the youngest and Riley got first dibs on everything this year since it was her first year. We love helping people out! That's how I met @Red Beard. Now he's got me on this site and teaching me how to climb a tree with 2 little strings

Sounds great. Stafford's just up the road a bit from the Hill correct? I'd like to get your contact info if you don't mind sharing it.

Anyone here from VA, I'm apart of a deer recovery group. I usually cover an hour to hour and half from Stafford but my group covers most of VA. Reach out if you ever need a dog. Nose to the Ground is the group.

Good to know. Used to have access to the group when I was on Facebook but I ditched that.

I don't have Facebook either but the lady Marcia that runs it knows that so we just communicate over the phone and she keeps me in the loop that way. What part of VA are you in?

I’m in Chesterfield just outside of Richmond. Hunt mostly in Amelia and Lunenburg.

Hey Red, do you gun hunt the Hill or strictly bow? I only bow it up anymore. Haven't gunned for deer in years. Also, do you hunt the CA's or just the TA's?
This was my first year hunting there. Next year I am CA eligible. Forgot to register a shotgun this year so I mostly only bow hunted. Went out with my mentor a few times and he gave me the opportunity to tote a BP. That was a nice range extension. He's been hunting that place for years and knows where quite a few good spots are. Think we made 9 trips over there this year and saw a total of 52 deers.

You must have a great mentor! I've been down there for the past two seasons sparingly and watched the videos the year before that but I still don't have my CA eligibility and can't ever get anyone on the phone to ask about it. I asked the GW about it but he never got back to me either. Guess I'll be a permanent TA guy!

Hey Gator. The normal process for the CA’s is that you are considered a probationary CA hunter the first 2 years. There are about 8-9 probationary CAs that you can go into alone while probationary. You can also go into the remaining CAs during that 2 year period as long as you go with a veteran CA hunter. After two years as a probationary hunter with no violations, you become a veteran CA hunter and can hunt all the CAs. If you didn’t get the CA permit when you got your permits last fall, do so now and get into a CA or two during the upcoming spring turkey season. That way you can count 21/22 season as your first year. I’ve been a veteran for years but for the past couple years I’ve only hunted the CAs a few times. Really hunted them to maintain veteran status. Plenty of deer in the TA’s.
