Are you planning on just going to pick some up at the store if you need one?
Yep. In a perfect world I cut and wrap everything and get it frozen. Then it just has to stay frozen a few hours so a cheap soft sided cooler will fit the bill.

I will be bringing a set of knives with me, I figure I can buy zip lock bags there if needed.

Even if I can't freeze stuff, I can triple bag them and they shouldn't burst/leak.

Ok cool. This is the one thing I haven't exactly figured out yet. I'm just going to copy whatever you do :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Ernie, how are you gonna freeze everything at a campground? Are you checking a freezer? I will have a small freezer in my camper but I doubt I could fit one hog in it. Guess you could buy one and return it, just trying to think through all this. Too bad I don't have a small one to throw in the camper.

I'm driving so I don't have to worry as much, just throw the coolers in the camper/truck.

@redsquirrel, I'm in the DC area, I would be happy to bring your meat up here and we could meet up one night halfway, I don't think you're all that far from me. Up to you...

Exactly. That's the problem.

Perhaps we could find one on local craigslist for under $100 and we all chip in $10 for it?

I really appreciate the offer! Hopefully we can figure something easier out!

If its de-boned it shouldn't need to big of a cooler. Wal-Mart usually sells dry ice. Just don't tell the airline it has dry ice in the cooler. Tape it closed real good with gorilla tape and you should be good. I've sent food up north to family this way and it always worked with no problem.

A decent solution is a cooler with dry ice.
FAA and airline regulations regarding dry ice are....

“Dry ice/carbon dioxide may not weigh more than 5.5 pounds in checked or carryon baggage.
The package must be designed to permit the release of carbon dioxide gas to prevent buildup of pressure.”

A cooler with something keeping the lid from forming a tight seal (like rolled up paper under a corner of the lid) qualifies as not building up pressure. In a typical cooler, 5lbs will MORE than cover the cooling requirements for a typical day of flying.

This keeps you from having to find a place willing to freeze wild game for your shipping needs.

Until it is time to pack for the flight home, pull the plug in the cooler, tilt it towards the drain, and pour ice over the meat... covering the entire top. Lots of guys down here in the south will replenish the ice as needed for several days like this. It lets the ice slowly melt over top of the meat, but not letting it sit in water, removing any residual blood.

Here is a good overview of a safe processing procedure... just like deer, quality meat requires a quick drop in meat temp.

My biggest concern is leakage.

If people are interested, Here is a freezer 15 minutes away. I can't remember, do we have power in camp?

Cool video. It doesn't look much different from doing a deer.

I'll split the freezer with you if you want, and then anyone else who wants to chip in can. If we can freeze the meat before we fly we can just put it in a cooler and take it on the plane, we wouldn't even need dry ice.
