Setting up for cruising bucks

Biggest downside is the lack of a lanc protocol remote jack. Remotes are super handy for self filming. Otherwise, great camera.

I'm sure its a good camera. I have the HC-V770. The only thing I wish I had known before I bought it was that there isn't a remove zoom for it. That would be really handy for hunting, I know @BassBoysLLP is running one. But as far as footage for the size of the camera I've very happy with mine.
I don't have that camera. I'm still running my trusty canon g30. It's a touch bigger and doesn't shoot in 4k.

Sorry, I mean that you're running your remote. You covered that in your last post :grimacing:

Remote is definitely not a requirement. It makes it a lot easier though. That is a big decision for the guys looking to take all their footage to the next level. DSLR/Mirrorless and remotes aren't common. If you want to go that route, good chance you are back to no remote

Yes. I didn't know I wanted to run a remote until after I started self filming. I didn't find out my camera couldn't run one until after i bought my camera. @DaveT1963 I just want to give you the most information before you buy.

I appreciate it Red.

So how do you tell if a camera has a land remote jack? Anything that I should look for?

Yes. The entire Canon G and S series have lanc protocol remote terminals. These cameras are considered "prosumer". They are bigger than the handicams, but much smaller than the pro cam line up.

The g21 is a good choice. I've been using a g30. The g21 has most of the best features of the g30 plus some newer technology.

What about using a Canon DSLR? I'm invested in the glass already and I believe I can use an app with my phone tethered to the camera as a remote. I know the video isn't as nice as the regular video specific ones but I would think it would work.?

Actually, it's the other way around. You can get better film out of the DSLR/Mirrorless cameras. They just require a little more effort in the tree and don't accept the nicer remotes.

Disregard the above. I would have to use manual focus to avoid the constant noise from the focus shifting in the lens. Would work to video others but not self filming.

It will work. Lots of guys do it. Don't give up on it.

I'm going to try to use the DSLR to video my son this fall. I tried self filming around 2000. Had a nice camcorder that worked really well. It was light weight for those days (5 pounds or under with the extended battery). I had my dad videotape my bear hunt. I had a lot of fun with him and still give him a little razzing for missing the shot.

Is a mountable camera arm necessary if I'm filming someone else? I can take some very low light photos with a steady arm/hold. I can't find my mountable arm any more and already have been talked to by my wife about my hunting expenses. Not sure what I did with the camera arm.

For me, the ease of use and lightweight is more important than the better image quality of DSLR mirrorless crowd. The little handicams, or if you want to spend the money, the prosumer models are MUCH more user friendly than the DSLRs. And the picture quality is good enough for 99% of us.

A camera arm is never necessary but it makes the footage much steadier. The only requirement with filming is to have fun. If you aren't having fun, you need to reevaluate.

Without the arm I always seemed to find myself with the camera in my hand when it should have been the bow and vice versa. Never knew which one to grab when I first noticed the activity. Murphy's law I guess. With the camera arm I can start the camera and only need tend it slightly with my free hand rather than decide if I need to set it down completely.

I use a sony handycam picked it up for 100 bucks or so off Amazon and use a small adapter made by muddy that uses a realtree e z hanger. ( bow hanger ) I can zoom in on bucks across a food plot 150yds away and provides great footage I think So anyhow

I went with a Sony AX-53 -probably way overkill for someone with limited camera skills like me.
