Smoking clothes

Hardwood chips are supposed to be best for scent elimination by smoke. The theory is that smoke not only covers your scent but also kills odor causing bacteria and hardwood smoke has the highest concentration of these anti-microbial chemicals.

Dare I share my findings? I first read about this on Ohio sportsman. It got me calling around and investigating. My research was based on dogs. One of my contacts was an arson investigator. He said they would walk into burnt houses or large warehouses and the smoke smell was so strong it burnt your eyes and nose to breathe it. He said his dog would go through it like it was nothing and if an excellerant was used, the dog would find it. Think about that for a minute. The dog could distinguish between all that smoke and residual smell of gas or lighter fluid or whatever that had been burned in a fire with incredible heat. He explained dogs dont get overwhelmed with one scent and I think I recall him saying they can smell about 7 different scents at any given time. So when you walk into the house and smell turkey, the dog smells turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, gravy, your wife's perfume, your dirty shoes and is still happy to see you. Lol Deer have the same ability, but have way more receptors than dogs.
The deer smell you, the smoke, the scent free soap, the acorns, etc. If it gives you confidence, use it. Ive had several deer track me using no scent control or cover scent. Heck I had a deer lick me one time turkey hunting. Just cause deer dont seem to react doesn't mean they dont smell you.

Yeah I don't think we will ever really comprehend just how well they can smell! It's amazing that's for sure.

I smoked my clothes for a couple years in west Texas. We hunted over bait and had issues with does and fawns coming in from all directions while ground hunting. The smoke made all the difference in the world. These north Texas bucks are a completely different animal though. Haven't tried it out on the yet.

Out of all the methods I've tried using a scent lok suit and hunting at 28 to 30 feet above the ground is hands down the most effective.

This will be my 6th season using a bee smoker. Like G2 I have streamlined it by using hickory chips and a torch. Last season I picked up a mini torch so that it all stores in an empty ice cream bucket in the back of the hunting truck ready to go.

I've had great experiences with this method just using the smoker on my clothing, pack equip etc.. every time before walking in, if you fire it up when you first get parked it doesn't take much extra time.

This is true. Once you know what you're doing, It takes maybe 2 minutes to do a pre-hunt smoke session.

Yes, it is definitely less effort than a locked-down scent free system.

For you guys using the bee smoker, how are you putting it out after smoking up? Just dose it with water?

I whittled a wine cork down to fit in the spout (to cut off the air supply) and then put the whole thing into a metal bucket with a lid. Just let it die from oxygen deprivation.

Amazon has a few for around $13 shipped.
The pellets are more which is why I just went with bulk wood chips that I already had.

Mine came with a decent carrying case that holds the smoker and enough chips for several days of hunting.

Take it up the tree and keep smoking like an ozonics.:) Do you smoke yourself in your underwear, or just your clothes?

Any of you smokers camp? How do you get the smell out of your sleeping bag?

I've only been out to hunt deer four times in my life, so take this with a grain of salt.

I fired up my smoker and made hardwood smoke. I ran smoke through the interior of my pants and jacket. I ran smoke over the outside of my backpack.

I saw my first deer on day two, it was a pronghorn. It walked right under my stand with my seat at 15 feet. Didn't smell me at all, from what I can tell. I turned around in my seat, he looked up at me, looked me straight in the eyes, and slowly backed away and went another direction.

I feel comfortable with this technique because tons of people heat their homes with wood out here, and I imagine I smell like a normal winter evening.
