So you thought I was nuts when it came to the swaider/knaider.....

Let me put some gas on the crazy:

Instead of 1” strap how about an amsteel daisy chain girth hitched to tree?

I was thinking something similar. Maybe make a device that is just a “versa button” with a hook under it and a piece of daisy chain.

Ok. After rereading the thread, I think I understand the concept better. You're looking at making 4-5 straps and place 1 every 4 feet or so. The strap will be left there and removed during the climb down. For some reason I thought you were going to kind of pull each strap on the way up.

I may look into making something similar to "2 strap" up a tree and rappel down.

I've been thinking this same way sence August but couldn't rap my head around having a hook hanging out at chest height if I slipped! I've lost to many fingers already and certain things, like climbing with a ring on, I just can't do. Any concern about this?

ok, I have to ask, how many fingers have you lost already?

I would expect an amsteel daisy chain to roll over on itself and slightly down the tree more easily than a flat strap secured with a cinch buckle. I'm sure it could still work, but the strap would probably be less hassle in trade for it's increased mass/weight.

Rappel - makes total sense to rappel in this situation. I do it even when using sticks.

IF you're going to rappel, I like the idea of using a single stick and aider. Seems like it would be pretty similar to what's going on here, and then you would only have to make a single stop on the way down.

To get even more light, I guess you could try 1 sticking it with the predator and then rappel down.. There couldn't be a lighter system out there than that.

It’s a sweet system for sure. Carbon bolts and mini drill is lighter, though.

Could you do the same thing but without the buckle/Ratchet and use something similar to a versa strap. Wrap it around, though an eye, and step on the tag end to tighten it down?

The Cain method or its variation.. might be more to your liking. I haven’t quite mastered the knaider and swaider. It does take work to master. The Cain method has you using your tether to climb. Seems more secure.

It won't know for sure until I get a few more made up and really push it through its paces, but I am guessing I will get four feet per Tree Strap. Probably can get creative for more height, but I want to keep it safe and focus on another goal, which I did with the knaider/swaider; be able to still do it when I am over 60 years old. I'm 53 now, and time is flying.

I am not going for less "steps" with this. My goal is safety, speed, compact, less weight and no tree damage. If I can't tick off those boxes then WE Steps and knaider/swaider will continue to reign as King for me.
I'm 61 Peter....k/s is no problem!

I think I'm about to have some WE stepps for sale. Great idea!

Here is a "final" version of what I am thinking about. I made up two and have the original prototype as well for climbing and testing. So far it works quite well. Very easy to set on the tree. Each weighs 7 ounces. Packs down to nothing. I get about 3.5 feet with each one.

You do not have a solid platform like the WE step to stand on but it is plenty stable. I just sewed a second metal loop on the Swaider at knee height so I can stand on both feet when tying on. Not sure I need it but just thinking of some of the heavier guys; it may add additional comfort.

I climbed three high with no issue in the dark. I have to work out how make the knaider/swaider work easily, but it is pretty close just as is. Soon as I can do this in daylight and have someone hold my phone, I will have a vid for you guys.

Need to play around with these on various trees as well. I have strapped the original around a bunch , including one as thin as 4 inches in diameter and have had no issue. Of course things change a bit once you are fifteen feet or so in the air.

Thanks for the update! I love where this is going and think this will be the best light weight option. I just ordered a knaider & swaider for this idea alone.
