Spartan Forge Platform Now Offers LIDAR

@gcr0003 , I think this is why my compass was off in SF

@Glenn , related to your comment I linked above. Can you still drop pins and use other navigation/gps features I'm airplane mode?

Yessir. Fully functions. Obviously you can’t download offline maps but other than that I can navigate, map scout and drop pins with no issues.

I also saw a post by the DIY dude on the face tok where he said if you’ve looked at an area while you have good service or on WiFi etc, that the app retains that area in memory and you don’t have to download the map of that area.

I wouldn't trust that functionality once I fully close out of the app myself. I can see it being stored in the app cache, but not until the next day neccessarily

Awesome info, thanks!

Neither would I. Downloading maps is too easy not to do it ahead of time especially for areas you hunt frequently. But it's nice to know it's there. Or should be. I'll see if I can find that post and copy/paste it in here.

Here ya go...

I'm trying it out now, seems to work without a phone signal, must be a SAT. connection. I'm really liking it so far,

Brian Looney It'll work in offline mode. You can either pre-download maps or if you've already been browsing the cache will be saved on your phone and still viewable when you lose signal

I have the free version. My phone has been freezing, locking up and sometimes will not charge. The phone goes into restart multiple times a day. I disabled SF or it seems to be better. I have a Samsung with Android. I am going to Uninstaller SF and reinstall.
Any other suggestions?

Has anyone made the switch recently to Spartan forge from OnX and been overwhelmingly blown away? My OnX subscription is coming to an end but I am unsure about making the switch.

I did. SF, in my opinion, is a much better app at half the cost. I don't miss OnX except when I'm trying to share data with folks who still have OnX. And even then I don't miss OnX as much as I hate those dudes for still hanging on to that cartoon drawing of an app. (That's a joke just in case it hits anyone in the feels.)

(sorta)

I'm torn. Definitely miss a few layers, mast trees for sure, and the property boundaries and measurements are better in onX. Measurement works in SF, just not as nice. Lidar and UAV blow OnX out of the water, especially if you're a flat lander like me lol.

Ya know I think it's just the switch that is annoying to me. Measure, trees and property boundaries are better in OnX , but I'm not sure how much that means. Lidar put me on the biggest deer I've seen hunting, and predicted at least one other good spot as far as sign. Putting a camera there tonight

I still have Onx but only because I havent migrated my pins over to SF. I agree with @Glenn, SF is way better for me and I havent noticed having any of the property lines being way off like @Nutterbuster mentioned elsewhere but I havent really checked that very close.

Those property lines are more important to dudes from Alabama. Those fellas tend to hug 'em a bit tighter.

Grass is greener and such.

The overwhelming amount of places I hunt I know exactly where the lines are and have for years. I am going to check SF a little closer on that because onx was exactly spot on for every survey marker I ever checked it against in AR and CO.

When I had OnX mine was always off by 10-20 yards here in SC but once in those areas it was close enough you could tell where the line was; fence, paint, cut line, transition zone etc. My surveyor buddy says that's a county GIS issue and not the app as the apps get/buy their info from the county.

But surveyors are known truth bending stand stealers so take that for what it's worth.

Spartan Forge’s imagery is very crisp. I took the dive last night and am starting to getting familiar. The map features + LiDAR makes OnX look gimmicky real fast. I also like the way the waypoints are set up and look. They are very specific if needed and are categorized well. Unless something super annoying arises I think I’m going to have a hard time justifying staying with OnX. Good initial impressions overall from me.

Agree. Spartan Forge has caught up very fast with what the other companies offer. Their intel, which was the original selling point, is being surpassed by the fact that it's just a good mapping app with lots of well thought out features. I've kept OnX because some of the data layers but as far as actual mapping its SpartanForge or CalTopo for me. There's a couple things CalTopo can do that SpartanForge doesn't.

Caltopo has weekly satellite imagery. Very nice for keeping up with logging operations.
Caltopo can also stack layers and adjust their transparency. Sometimes, I really like to be able to see the satellite imagery while also seeing the LIDAR.

Does anyone know if you can layer topo and satellite of your choosing on SF? I use the hybrid layer on OnX quite a lot.
