I finally got through all 400 post. We need a section for “videos only “for everyone’s ideas and methods.
red squirrel climbing aider video from saddlepalooza:
Thanks to @bowhunter15 for taking the videos. Sorry I took so long to get them up for everyone.
Those were just small climbing slings that I girth hitched onto the strap. I was improvising a lighter system that my stepps to bring on the plane.
I agree, I think when someone invents a method they should put together a "How-To" or "Guide" and we could put them all in one place, it's hard to dig through all of the threads to get something figured out, especially if you didn't follow it along as it was happening.
Welcome to the site!@redsquirrel hello fellow NJ Hunter! Anyway, now that we’ve established I also live in a communist state... I see in the video you had the silent approach steps or something similar. Also heard you packed those for more ease on a plane instead of WE. Furthermore, in the beginning of this really really long thread I recall hearing Crawford rope steps. I was wondering as you’ve progressed through it if the WE is still preferred and how you would compare Cranford rope to silent approach. Kinda wondering about least weight vs safety. I’m getting tired of carrying 4 XOP sticks in. They’re not bad putting up or climbing but I want to cut weight & bulk. I was leaning toward trying something with the cranfords when I came across this feed.
Welcome to the site!
I had been playing with the silent approach and yes I only used them in the video because they were lighter for packing down to saddlepalooza. I really don't like them and have since sold them. I haven't specifically done this with cranford rope steps but you could make it work. I've been meaning to try hanging a prussic cord off a rope step and using it like I did in the video. Too many projects, not enough time! This entire season I have been carrying 8 wild edge stepps with only the knaider. It has been a great balance between light weight and safety for me. It's nice and easy to climb and packing in a bag of 8 feels like almost nothing in my MR popup. I tryed the swaider but I wasn't comfortable with it going into the season. The only reason I haven't been using the RS aider this season is because I'm comfortable hooking onto the stepp now but I can't put the second stepp high enough to clip into that it makes it worth it. I've been better off just putting the second stepp at head height and using the knaider.
I attach all but the first stepp on the tree at head height as well. I agree it is a lot easier to put it on at head height. I use my golden bucks for my ROS when I'm mobile. Either screw in steps or bolts when I'm in a preset.I’m with you on starting off with knaider to build comfort but I just added the swaider and I could argue some benefits aside from reduced number of Stepps.
I feel like attaching the step at face height is easier. The swaider lets you test the stability of the Stepp with less commitment, I feel.
One thing that made adding the swaider easier was figuring out the length. I took the knaider length from foot loop to hook and made the swaider exactly twice that. Worked perfectly.
Are you using golden bucks as ROS? Or WE? Loving WE ROS but curious what the “Ameristep ROS” hype is about
