Treebolts revisited

Has one ever pulled out of tree on anyone accidentally?
Never pulled on out with my hand, but I have the grip on my boots pull them out. I usually tap them in with my foot on the way down just to make sure they are all the way in the tree just in case my boot pulled one partially out as I climbed.

Do the treebokts hurt to stand on for any length of time as a platform?

I’ll use two bolts per step as a platform, all the way around a tree, the spacing between the bolts is roughly 2” apart. I’m a leaner and can hunt all day.

You might want to try a block of wood with a hole in it to lose the bolt through before putting it on the tree. I've not tried it yet, but it seems really simple, light and comfortable.

Just throwing this out there. I finally pulled the trigger on the hand drill this morning while sipping my morning coffee. Received an email later from the CEO, Jerry Milo's, stating that they were waiting for parts to build my drill. He told me that since they expected a delay in shipping, he was going to throw in the electric drill bit for free. Definitely went above and beyond.

I got one is a shopping cart. I should pull the trigger as well!

So, honest injun'...

Those of you who have drilled lots of trees and watched them over the years, do they harm the tree? I almost can't see how they wouldn't. Especially if you remove the bolts and are leaving 15-20 open wounds.

I try to be environmentally conscious, and on a practical level I'd hate to ruin a tree that's right where it needs to be.

Warren has been drilling trees more than any of us. He says they don't harm the trees. Pretty small wounds.

It doesn’t harm the tree life but it does harm the number of clear faces on the saw log. If I can , I try to drill less valued trees such as gum, sycamore, hickory if possible. I don’t like drilling trees everywhere but one or two each property seems ok.

Guys I know you are running a 3/8" 6" bolt. I'm a big dude, and want a bit more bolt sticking out. I can get a custom made 3/8" 8" bolt for $7.50 CDN. As an alternative I can get a 1/2" 8" grade 8 bolt for $4.63 CDN.

To me an 8" bolt seems like a better idea apart from having to drill larger holes.

Am I overthinking this?

Have you tried the 6” bolt yet?
The issue with the 1/2” is you won’t have a hand drill option and you would have to DIY your own power drill version as well.
Also, those are some STEEP prices on bolts either way.

- I haven't tried the 6" bolts yet - and I probably should
- DIY a power drill version? I would just get 9/16" drill bit and put it in my cordless.

I am 6'4" 220lbs. If you guys say I am good on 3/8" x 6" bolts, then I will go with them.
