Treebolts revisited

I found a bit at Harbor Freight that when chucked in a drill is about the perfect length.... Also got lucky and was able to go to a local supplier and buy bolts for .60 cents each for un-coated and .70 each for coated.

Lucky, I just dropped 2.89 a piece on bolts at Ace Hardware

I have an Erwin bit and I made a depth stop for it. I have the bolts. but haven't used them yet. I'm thinking I'll just paint the bolts, right now they are a gold color. I'm going to use my Dewalt cordless. to drill.
You guys that are dipping, is the coating ripping off when you climb on them?

Nope. Dip is holding up well.

Ouch.

I dont saddle hunt (yet) but am adopting a lot of what you guys do into my loc-on sets. I plan to buy 200 more bolts and replace my aging tree snake type steps as I go along. Ill leave them in each tree for the season and then remove them when the stands come down at the end of the year.

I bought a cheap Hercules drill from Harbor Freight too and set 25 bolts in two trees and used about 25% of the battery indicator.

Went out today with bolts and a Dewalt drill for the first time. I was just scouting and I ended up prepping a tree for tomorrow. The only issue I have is I put my platform up too high so I had issues transferring from bolts to platform. Bolts are so easy! Tomorrow I’ll bring a screw in or a WE step to help with the transition.

I have requested one for Christmas :)mak
I haven’t drilled a single tree with a power drill yet.... kinda looking forward to that.
Make sure it is the brushless fuel model. They have two battery sizes as well . The small battery will do a tree and maybe more the bigger one will do more I only do my bush at home so I am not sure how many it will do. But it works. I have never killed a battery using it on a tree but I have not tested to see how many it will do.
The brushless cordless products by dewalt and milwalkee are excellent

I like to drill and install bolts past where I want to put the platform. It took me a few trees to learn that lesson. Then I can also use the bolts above the platform for hanging bow and pack. If the tree is united to shooting around, I’ll also put a bolt on the back side at Platform level for stepping around the tree when shooting or hiding from oncoming deer.

Just checking in with you guys that went the carbon bolt route. Have you had any issues with them or are they working out fine? (Asking for a friend, before he orders some)

I’ve not had any issues with mine either. Every time I use them I just can’t believe how nice they are. I even leave them in my saddle pouch when I go to hunt a preset with bolts. They’re so light I don’t bother to take them out.

Thanks guys, that what I wanted to hear! Mine are on the way. I’m getting everything situated on the jx3 to avoid a pack and the light weight will really help as to where I can place them.

Please remind me the carbon fiber material details that is working successfully for these? This is a long thread.

https://www.rockwestcomposites.com/...od/carbon-round-pultruded-solid-rod/47311-l96

The inquisitive & innovative members in this group looked at alternatives to grade 8 carbon steel bolts. Some found titanium bolts at about 1/2 the weight and then some genius found 3/8” (.375) protruded, multi directional carbon fiber rods cut to length (6”) that are about equal in strength to grade 8 steel, at a fraction of the weight. 15 cut to 6” for about $114.00 shipped.

I have a set of the carbon ones ready to go, just haven’t got to use them yet. They are CRAZY light!
