Treebolts revisited

private land I would definitely have trees drilled for bolts or have screwins....Private I would also learn to use spurs, so it may change my previous statement.

public I'm 1 sticking

I one sticked it only last season. I got tired of it quickly. I was rappelling down in the dark because it was a lot easier. I think I'd rather carry 2 more sticks and a movable aider. My hat's off to you for doing it all the time man. I just found it took too long and was a lot of movement.

I always rappel down. going up is always so much easier and faster. I was rappelling down prior to 1 stick though, so maybe I just need to practice.
One stick is just like anything else though. You do it and refine it if you decide to stick with it. I carried 5 sticks for years...hated carrying them. after refining my 1 stick I can climb almost as fast....its not slow with the proper setup. (rcharness/sitdrag, versabutton, modified cam strap, dual ropemans, tree quickie) I go up trees as if I had an unlimited stack of sticks behind my back, and almost as fast. it took some figuring out though, but you cant make it work across all setups that's for sure

And the PVC would be easy for other hunters to spot.

you could make them just slightly longer than your drill bit and actually paint them....if youre following what I'm trying to describe in an insert

I think I can use the tree as my platform in the spot. I'll just stand on the trunk and branches.

And now you’ve got me thinking I need to work on it. I’ll be honest, I did no pre season practice and haven’t worked on it yet. I bought a sit drag (had the rch), the only decent stick I could find (helium), and some rope and accessories and started hunting immediately.

I work at heights every day so I’m over confident when it comes to climbing. When I’m tied in it’s even worse - I’ll do practically anything haha. The only practice I did was shooting practice using my stick and some screw ins as a platform. I should give it some effort and practice to refine it and see if it is a viable option before I completely write it off.

Are you planning to leave the 6” bolts in the tree? Any worry of the tree swallowing them up in a year or two?

I've wondered about this too, but I think you could leave them in a year take them back out with a wrench or cordless impact drill a fresh hole and put them back in... if you set them up post season for the next year then you could refresh them the next post season and this would also give you opportunity to make adjustments to placement or pull it completely if you no longer feel good about the spot.... I had full intentions of reincarnating my API skyhooks when I found a soloution to the original bolt no longer available, but this might be a better option it would cost me more per tree to prep but I wouldn't have to pack my skyhooks in.

its not the thread for it so ill send you a pm

Spurs are great for run N gun, but nothing beats a preset!

I took down a tree stand tonight and drilled holes for bolts an another tree 30 yards from it which will allow quieter access in the fall. There were some monster tracks in the mud and a lot of doe dung and some buck buck dung as well. I hate to wish summer away but, come on November.

They're heavy. 40 bolts (enough for 2 trees) with an 18v dewalt and 2 batteries was not light by any stretch. Very heavy. I'd guess 20lbs.

40 bolts???? WOW! I only carry 12 bolts. Almost always drill 10 bolts high (20 feet for me) and almost never leave the bolts in the tree. Put them in going up and pull them out coming down.

The idea was 15 bolts high to 25ish feet and then 5 extra for a platform. I ended up needing about 14 to get where I wanted and scratched the platform. I felt like the bolts were going to pull out the whole time. I suppose it takes some getting used to.

Yep, just like everything else takes time too. And, putting that time and effort in will pay off big time with the ability to have a routine that's proven to be efficient, smooth and safe.

Only had one bolt pull out on me and that was when I was climbing up, two seasons ago. Didn't realize that my boot must have caught the head and pulled it while I was climbing. Certainly noticed it on the way down. I'm telling you there's a huge gap between steps when one comes up missing. Being on a morning hunt helped out a lot. Had to lower myself as in a reverse chin until my foot reach the next one in line. I can reach 8 feet standing flat footed and I was stretched out. Don't ever want to experience that again.

Don’t worry. When you go back to them next season, it will be like it’s epoxied in. Then every season after that, they will be shorter! Lol

I've considered leaving just the platform bolts in on presets. They'd be good and tight come September.

That sounds awesome. In the cold weather it was taking me only slightly less time to one stick up the tree. I bought an ATC to rappel out of the tree because it was unbearable doing the one stick method all the way down. I'm really excited to pick up an EZ kut and give it a whirl this spring!
Yea gonna start prepping trees here soon. Can't wait
Good luck!
