XOP/Ameristep combo

@bowhunter15 so I️ tried the double and it is easier than threading the strap thru buckle, I️ am sure I️ can tie it tighter to shorten the loops. But I didn’t like how it put the step so far around the tree on loop/caribiner side. So I️ tried w just the biner, is that an issue besides the metal on metal? Also I️ would make sure it wasn’t twisted.

I️ will probably just leave it the way it was, larks headed on both sides.

What's the disadvantage of the larks head? Does it fall off when walking in? Ziptie?

The disadvantage is having to thread the LW strap through the buckle while setting it up on the tree

It's shorter than the amsteel comtinuous loop and can't fall off... so that's a plus. One thing I haven't tried is moving the attachment points to the next "rung" of the platform.

I tried the attachments further out on the platform. It didn't seem to gain a ton of real estate for how close you could put the step, and it was harder to cam over because the strap wanted to slide up the tree too much, preventing a good over center lock.

I was thinking a large ziptie would hold the larks head in place so you didn't have setup every time

The larks is not the annoyance, the connecting of the different sides of the strap at the tension buckle while 25 in the air is. Really not a big deal

It is if it's 15 degrees out and your fingers sting from the cold.

I like the idea of the carabiner directly onto the platform. It was what I tried first. But the carabiner shape doesn't closely match the contour of the molded platform. As a result, all of the stresses are concentrated on very small areas of metal, which I didn't like. It might work with a Biner that had a very flat inner surface.

maybe your could wrap some webbing around that piece of the platform to distribute the load.

Is the knot just a square knot?

I'm going to have to practice.

You guys think this will work for attaching the lone wolf strap via a binder? It’s a short sling I stitched up using 1” tubular webbing.

I personally wouldn't use anything that I sewed as a primary, I would tie the knot being sure to leave enough on the tag ends. Not saying it wouldn't work, but if it did break at least you would be connected to the tree via your tether, right?

True. Many parts of our primary system are sewn. The lone wolf strap itself, along with most of the saddle connection points. The lone wolf strap will break/stich points bust before my mini sling will.

I thought you sewed it yourself, industrial sewing machines and proper box patterns are a different story. Also, the thread is different than most home sewing machines can even handle. Do you have a heavy duty sewing machine? If so, can I borrow it? I've got a bunch of things I want to try!

I did, I know, I don’t. I trust my stitching, not saying I should and I understand your point. These type projects are clearly at my risk.
