I always do it with a hand drill. and the bits are just over 3/8th(I want to say 10mm?) so its easier to get the bolts in an out. The hand drill is really quite easy. DRilling trees with a power drill kisl batteries real quick, even a Li one. ITs also quiet. I can be up a tree in the dark, 10 bolts, in about 10 minutes.

Sure ya could. Lots of folks go that route. Me, I'd rather spend more time drilling and not have to carry a 20v drill and batteries. But whatever totes ya goats.

Sorry dudes complete nube!! Pretty excited to throw my stand out the window and be able to walk further in with less stuff and weight! I also have a lot of private to hunt and the ability to pre prep trees for the carbon fiber bolts with a normal cordless drill w/ 3/8inch bit do the trick??

no, you want the bit that is a little larger as I stated. other words then yuo get a little dirt, sawdust, or the tree swells at all during the season due to weather you will have a hard time getting them in.

if you want to use a power drill, get the treehopper power bit. there also need to be a good stop on it so you drill the right depth.

If I'm prepping private, I just buy 3/8 grade 8 bolts in bulk and leave them in the tree for both climbing and as a ring of steps at the top. Then all you have to do is climb up and fix your tether. You can buy 6", 3/8, grade 8 bolts in bulk from ebay for like 50 cents per bolt.

Man you guys are quick to replay!! I think I understand the point of carrying a lighter hand drill if I had to drill on the spot, but I wouldn't be toting that dang big ole drill everytime i went in. I would have all my trees pick out out and prepped prior to season

Me and @Vtbow have boring desk jobs. This is more fun, right vt?

From what you're telling me, I'd buy the drill bit treehopper makes for a power drill, and a case of steel bolts. Cheap, safe, easy.

I prep mine with the hand drill as well. its good practice and the more you use it the faster you are....and you should always carry one for the same reason I mentioned above--if you cant get a bolt in because of ice, swelling, whatever, you want to be able to clear it out.

That would def be a good option for private! TY! I will def be using bolts but I will probably run a platform just for comfort for the first season. Although I know this adds weight or possibly like VT a ring of steps.

Hell yeah, I've been fixxing stupid issues at work for the last 2 days straight, I literally put out IT fires from 8am to 5pm yesterday. I have to take a break everyonece in a while!

I"ve moved to using 4 bolts for my ROS as well this year. its solid and comfy with a good set of hiking boots, and quieter as well. I dont htink I"ll go back to a ring of Ameristeps for private ever again. I had used screw in cranford t's and like them for the same reason as bolts, but bolts are quicker.

Yes I think I will either carry the hand drill to clear holes, or a small cordless like listed prior in this post. As you can tell I am in the same boat with you guys job wise :laughing::laughing::laughing:

Try platform and ring. Choose what you like. It's not as simple as "platform more comfortable"

I guess I will have to experiment with this as well as a million other things, but it would be nice to save the $$ and not have to buy a platform..

hahaha I dont even know what saddle I like best, been trying many of them! So, I def havent gotten that far either as deciding platform vs step vs pegs etc etc lol.... Total Nube, but I have used bolts and pegs a long time getting into tree stands lol
