Cap screws from which kit?

And what i see is a manageable, non-catastrophic failure when subjected to loading far more than realistic worst case. They are rated for 12% elongation minimum meaning like a 1.5 in radius bend before breaking (and you probably slip off first, or the bending force drops).

Bending is a safety feature. Unless you are looking for some serious fall arrest (and there are better options) 3/8 gr 8 is fine.

I agree with you on the 3/8 from the hardware store bending being the better option and in all reality in normal use would prolly be no big deal.

The bolts in the middle are the ones that sheered off and snapped. They broke right at the threads. They broke flush with the tree. These were out of a kit I bought but they seem to be the bolts that are offered by treehopper and quick and quiet.. I just assumed they couldn’t handle that heavy of a load so started testing other bolts.

The 3/8 were all drilled same depth with same bit with stopper

I'm curious about a couple things...
Did the cap screws break INSIDE the hole or at the edge of the hole? Was the hole depth identical for each of the bolts tested?
And mattsteg just asked my next question...which "kit" are you using?

Broke flush with the hole, same bit used with stopper for holes. I bought a used kit offline, I’m assuming they were the same bolts that are offered online but they could have been a cheaper bolt I have no way to tell.. I know that for my own piece of mind I’m going to try some bigger bolts

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most bolts have some letter or number that distinguishes it from the rest? I dont have any bolts.....yet, will get some grade 8 bolts when i have a place i can use them

My grade 8s don’t.

Every grade 8 hex bolt I've ever seen had 6 hash marks on the head, like so.

Hmm. Maybe mine do too. I don’t recall. But it’s -15 outside and I’m comfortable on the couch under a warm blanket. So I’m not going out to look. Lol

I agree on the grade 8 markings on hex, but are there markings on cap screws?

Do you mean carriage bolts, they have a round head and a square shoulder? I've never seen them at a hardware store that weren't standard grade 2s. All hex head bolts that are steel should be marked with 3 hashes (grade 5) or 6 hashes (grade 8) or no hash marks (grade 2).

I meant allen screws, aka cap screws. Are there grade marks on allens. I have a few grade 8 allens but they are all coated so I can't see if there are markings...not sure where they would be since space in mark a head is limited.

Grade 8 Hex Cap Screws/Bolts
A grade 8 bolt is stronger than the more commonly used grade 5. It is made of alloy steel and has six radial lines on the top of the bolt

This is what I found online

I need to read all of this & take notes

Gonna see if I can have another option for long walks

They are awesome but only in some circumstances. There's a lot of places you aren't allowed to use them.

@Vtbow I'm not crying, you're crying!

I may not be quite below the 5lb mark, but I'm pretty dang close with my ring of steps and a webbing tether and linemans.
