Back to sticks

Not sure what he is using but i use this Hawk EZ Sling when I carry my sticks.

I just sling it over my shoulder and it works pretty good. I use it when I climb too and then it just unclips and goes in my dump pouch on my last stick up. It looks out of stock at Hawk so not sure if its discontinued or what but looks like Farm and Fleet has one on clearance? Ive used mine like 3 years now or so and its held up like its new.

Thanks for the link just bought the last one in existence for 15 buckaroos.. I have a carry strap already with cinch buckles maybe LW idk.. I think this will be way easier in the dark.

Haha, glad you were able to grab up the last one in existence!

Its a simple thing but I like mine and the ability to clip or unclip the strap with the buckles is pretty convenient. And for $15 compared to what we all spend on other hunting stuff its a no brainer.

I use spurs and WE stepps with a K/S when I have to. I have owned a set of LW mini's that I literally used once. If you're willing to put in the practice time and have a little athleticism/balance there is no question which method is more versatile. I can get 5 foot per step very quietly, no stick can compare to that. After becoming proficient with kiwi spurs and WE stepps with the K/S, I would hunt from the ground before I carried a set of sticks in with me.

It’s funny how some of us try one thing and accept it as a viable option while the rest of us chase the next, better option. Countless people have went from a stick to a step and back to a stick. What really makes my day are the people that are replacing $15 stepps with $150 mini sticks.

It’s a struggle. Feel like I’ve settled the stick or not stick conflict, but every once in a while I find myself sending an “interested” pm about some sticks. Luckily nothing has panned out. I’m not sure why I do it. Between my WE Stepps and strap on steps, I should be happy.

With that being said those mini shikars look cool and I’m on the list to try the mini stick that’s being passed around. Not sure how many more OOAL sales I can pass on.

Tried the $20 WE stepp and thought they were trash and couldnt understand how anyone would like them. But some people do. Different strokes for different folks... I haven’t seen a $150 mini stick yet though...:)

My 3 things are packabability, weight, and ease of use. I own primal steps - with the cam strap, stock length heliums- also with strap, knaider/swaider, bolts, SRT, and am about to girth hitch a 3 step Amsteel aider to a tree and see how that works. I have a hard time picking which one to use when I hunt. I can’t bring myself to get rid of any of it because I can think of a situation where each would be the best tool for the job.

For me personally it is a balancing act between packability, ease of use and safety. I gave the WE Stepps a good and thorough opportunity. I hunt a TON of evenings after a full day of work, and I'm already tired, sore & beat up on my way in to whatever spot I choose. Scaling the tree was sometimes easy with the Stepps, and sometimes more challenging. My concern was the days when I was already feeling it from work, coupled with the challenging climb, I had the safety concern that descending in the dark, quite possibly in inclement weather with my gear on my back, already tired and sore, and already had a challenging climb, that's when accidents happen. I found myself going back to sticks more & more because I'm very comfortable with them. I'll give mini sticks a fair shot, so far I'm very happy with the package.

@iamcorey Ibpacked sticks when my son or nephews sit with me. They are just easy and simple without the need for directions. I spent most of my season climbing vintage strap on steps, bolts, and aluminum spurs. 12 titanium bolts and a hand drill in a cell phone case makes for an attractive package.

I really liked the stepps. Never found climbing with them slow or challenging. Climbing down and storing them sometimes left me wanting more. If it was cold, rainy, or otherwise nasty weather I would often grab sticks.

I"ve been all over the place with climbing methods. Currently I have 10 aluminum strap on steps, a seto fo 4 full length LW sticks, a st of LW parts to cut down to 22" when I have the time, and and I just picked up some Leverage minis to try out again(I've owned them once, but ruled sticks out at the time). I"ve also owned original LW minis with rope mod, and I have bought Stepps, 3 times and sold them every time. I also have bolts and the original Wodpecker drill. I use the drill 90% of the time. I"ve come to the conclusion that sticks are AWESOME when you are carrying a stand, but sucke for packing otherwise. Where i'm stuck is with my guidos, and hopefully eventually a skinny JX3. Sticks should pack better I'm hoping going back to the leverage minis with a fixed aider can get the job done at a reasonable weight and packability. Sticks are just SO fast once you're at the bottom of the tree. I always have hated packing them up at the end of a hunt with cold hands and being tired though....

Bolts just beat everything if you can use them, but I have to have an option for property I dont want to drill holes in trees...

Climbing methods are an ongoing battle.

I’d love to use bolts or spurs but alas I cannot. That would put the whole climbing thing to bed for me.

I think a lot of the issues everyone is talking about with the we steps could be solved with a different type rope. From what I understand is the rope that comes with them, if they are fairly new, aren’t stressed/stretched out enough yet and you are finding out they seem to come loose. I just purchased a large set of steps. I’ve only been able to check one out in the yard so far, but I can already see how that can be an issue. I plan on strapping a bunch to the tree as tight as I can and leave them hang for a while. Then I’m going to tighten them up and leave em there again to see how that works out. I’m not gonna count on the rain so I’ll hose em down some to see if that helps stretch em. I may change or actually just add a different rope and use it and compare differences if any.

Its about as bad as finding THE pack.I tried WE two different times and went to Helliums. Really like the Hawks but cannot stand carrying them. Went to a ROS and strap on ameristeps, all in a sewn shoulder bag. I think I've found it. Its good we don't all want the same thing or we'd be in a jam.

Sounds like weve all done about the same thing. I can say I honestly loved my muddy pro's BUT I couldn't deal with carrying a 10lb set of sticks. I liked the speed and ease of the cam cleat and could get to 28ft using my Kn/Sw. I tried WE stepps also and ended up selling bc of the fiddle factor with the rope, caming over, etc. Considered buying again and trying with amsteel. Im desperately hoping to find a solution that allows me to use a Kn/Sw in a small package. I did order a shikar the other morning while I was half asleep before work...I tend to make impulsive purchases early in the morning! Now, if someone ever finds a cam cleat to fit those sticks, ill have no problem dropping 300 more to have a set of those. Maybe I should try some mini sticks next. Im currently using spikes, preset bolts, SRT, and occasionally my openshot seat(LWHC mode)

Ill add that if somehow the WE stepps had a cam cleat or even just a versa button, anything to eliminate the need to tie a knot and cam it over, it would be perfect for me...room for both feet, light, quick, compact, and most importantly Kn/Sw compatible. I have considered adding a continuous loop to a squirrel step and use one with a cam buckle every 5 feet. I have the stuff just haven't tried it yet.

I use the original cam strap on my Primal steps, that’s as easy as it gets with those.

That sounds like quite the gymnastics feat to me!!!! :tearsofjoy:

Ive tried every which way i could think of to use those little steps with just Amsteel to no avail. Just cant get them to sit tight enough to the tree with any method known to me with the Amsteel. Sucks cause I think i calculated I could use 9 of them to get to like 22 feet or so for under 3 pounds, oh well.

But that sounds pretty crazy to use a knaider/swaider with those things being theyre so small. I hope it works for you better than i think it will if you do give it a shot though, would be nice and light.
