Looking at it now. I tried an online lidar cloud point reader, but it only does LAS files, and USGS's site seems to have LAZ for my area.
getting your DEM image draped in the surface in google earth is pretty cool too.

It’s been a while since I did this, but I don’t think it was hard. I generated the DEM in global mapper, imported the shapefileninto AutoCAD Map and then exported it as a KMZ file. I think that’s how I did it. I work for an engineering firm, so I use mapping and drafting software daily. I use CAD to make my hunting maps and can set my DEM to the back, overlay an aerial image and set a transparency on it and then put whatever resolution of topo contours on top that I want. It looks pretty slick when it’s all finished. Send me an area you’re interested in and I could try to put something together for you.

Yeah, that sounds not too difficult but it prob take me a week, lol. I have two areas I hunt one is 10k acres and one is 20k. If that’s too much property then I understand. But if it’s no big deal I’d be very appreciative and happily send you some lunch money for the effort.

QGIS is a free GIS package that can handle LiDar to DEM -- think you may need an add-on. Like others have said there are a few ESRI products that can handle LiDar. I liked QGIS for home use, cheap and it's very open with many raster, vector, and database formats; shapefiles, oracle spatial, postgres, mysql, and kml to name a few.
I have some experience with GIS, CAD and solid model software and I can tell you the good software that renders data to the extent you are looking for is expensive and takes some real computing power. The dumbed down versions that are cheap or free will use the same data but it will be a much coarser render of that data compared to the expensive stuff. If you can find a server based option (think Google Earth) it might be possible to get what you want but I doubt a stand alone package will give you the "resolution" you are after.
Pardon my ignorance here, but I’m newer to map reading. What info are you looking for on Lidar maps and what info will these maps tell you if you have the files? Specifically for deer hunting.

LiDar is a light measuring method that supplies distances from sensor to object in this case the object being the Earth. In essence and after some processing LiDar supplies digital elevation data, (DTED), of the Earth's surface. As a hunter and depending on the resolution of the DTED one would be able to find specific terrain features prior to scouting an area -- sort of like pre-scouting and selecting spots you want to check out. In some cases one can use the DTED found within Google Earth, but LiDar usually supplies more resolution. I think Google Earth is using DTED where a measurement is supplied every 90 meters, in most cases LiDar contains a tighter grid spaces.
If you can find anything 5 meter resolution or less, it's so amazing...reveals old ag and ditches, little creeks and many other things too fine for a topo to pick up!
There is this huge impossible to scout swamp I want to hunt, where 2ft of elevation change is a mountain, and all the trees are 60 ft tall, my county has 2ft topo maps available on their online GIS mapping site, the property is in the next county over... where they have no such data.
Global Mapper will run you $500. Very nice software for the money and you can pretty much drag and drop files in and it’ll set the projection on the fly. They also have tons of help videos for it. If you have a college email address you should be able to request a school license for Autocad which is also equipped to handle these data files. Autocad is extremely powerful but can be overwhelming. Certain states have their own datasets which area usually better than a national database. Closer you are to an area that is subject to environmental changes like hurricanes, river flooding, etc. the better and more updated the dataset will be. Hope this shed some light on things.
I have been using QGIS (free) to look at this data (DEM and LIDAR) on private pieces I hunt. I will say that it takes a lot of processing power to run large pieces so I've found its better to work through small sections at a time. I learned mostly on youtube and internet forums. Very cool data once you figure out the settings!
