Small compact or large and comfy-this is the new dilemma in platforms

I would rather take my JX 3 and squirrel steps instead of a big platform for a long sit and comfort.
Big platform... 4 pounds more or less
saddle 1.5 pounds
pack 5 pounds

or a the JX 3... one thing, less noise, same weight, same bulk and easy to carry.

the only game changer I’ve seen since the kestrel!

Its just marketing. You already have small and light, doubtful they can sell you another one of those so they turn it into bigger is better.

No different with the latest heavy arrow movement. Need to sell more stuff so they market heavier is better
I disagree with your statement about the heavy arrow movement being driven by marketing. The heavy arrow movement is being driven by guys who want to help reduce wounding rates by bow hunters ( me and you) who are, or were in my case, throwing pencils. Go see how much heavy stuff you can order at Cabelas, not much if any. Go to Walmart and pick ya up some 300 grain single bevels, or anything over 125. Heavy arrows increase penetration and increase the percentage of recovered/killed animals on less than perfect hits, that's good for the animals, and it's good for OUR sport.

Everything you said applies to saddle hunting too. Not available in chain stores, better way of doing things, etc.

The advantages may or may not be true, but there's definitely some hardcore marketing involved.

This will be my first year in the saddle and have everything but the platform. I can't make up my mind on the Predator, Ridge Runner or wait for the Predator XL
Just get the Predator if your thinkin platform. We're not out there dancing. The Predator is plenty big enough. Well unless you have abnormally large feet or you prefer to hunt in flippers.

I agree with that but I still use a small platform in trees that are pre-prepped.If I one stick it,I have a small strait scout platform. You don't need a platform to be comfortable with a jx3 but I like being able to just turn and shoot from my weak side.

I don't think that heavy arrows with high FoC have better penetration capibilities may or may not be true, if I'm reading you correctly. I'm pretty sure it's a physical fact. Hopefully if enough people make some changes in the right direction we can influence the wounding stats. When I made the switch it was from info in here and not from a company that sells heavy stuff. But if the companies can market heavy and people buy in, well good for the companies pushing the change( chasing the dollar), and good for bow hunting. Trad archers have known about this new marketing trend for some time, it's about time us compound shooters got with the program.

Back in the 70s we shot wooden arrows. At 15 yards they used to go right through the hay bale from a 40 lb recurve bow. The new aluminum arrows did not. The trajectory on the wooden ones was like a banana. The aluminum was much straighter. Back to the future.

I'm not saying the claims about saddle hunting or heavy arrows arent true. I'm just saying small companies are successfully and aggressively marketing them now and making money off of people.

Trajectory is also a factor in whether they get wounded or killed.
This is going to be the reason the seesaw eventually tilts back to lighter arrows than whatever excessive weight folks will eventially start using. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. It's like handgun defense cartridges. First light and fast is in vogue, then big and heavy. 9mm....45acp...9mm....45acp. He loves me...he loves me not...he loves me...

@Kurt the biggest thing that is hurting the wounding statistics... If that is even a thing.. is hunting shows. These professional hunters out there lobbing arrows at buck 80 yards out or taking bad shots on animals for the sake of having film for their show. I can go buy the cheapest bow from bass pro or Walmart and go out and kill a deer no heavy arrow needed. Its about shot placement and the discipline to not take a bad shot on a deer just for the sake of bragging to your buddies that you killed something. Don't get me wrong I have wounded game before, I'm not saying I am perfect by any means. But less deer would be wounded if people had the fortitude to eat tag soup, over wounding a deer by taking an unethical shot. The heavy arrow trend is just the same as massive cut broadheads.....

So, is the trend heavier arrows and heavier platforms? Back to topic. :D
