Ok guys. Many of you who have been on a long time probably know I"m a ROS guy. Well, funny story--My 5 year old stabbed me in the achilles wiht a pitchfork about a month ago now and I couldnt walk for about a week. IT was honestly gruesome. I had to pull the thing out, after setting my 2 year old down, whom I had in my arms, as gently as possible. It went in over 1.25" according to the x-rays, and missed the achilles insertion by less than 1/16th an inch. ITs still killing me and pretty sore. Season opens next week, so I went out with the most cush setup I could think of. 5 strap on steps on an OCB and the Guidos. MY left foot has 0 stability and is throbbing now after only about 20 minutes of shooting practice. I"m thinking about a platform, but wondering how much of a difference its really going to make when maneuvering. I might have to go with a treestand this year. Thougth from anyone with a larger platform?(ambush, mission, assasin?) @100rollie has been trying to convince me to use a larger platform liek the assasin for 3 years now, so this might make me try it. Thanks for the input guys....

I’m not sure that a platform will help ya much. I like the platform because I lean almost all the time. I would think leaning would have more pressure on your foot than sitting and using a ros.

Ugh that sucks sorry hear... Maybe a solo scout. the angle would allow your feet to be on flat surface. No achilles issue but I've been enjoying more than my predator

Are you able to climb?
yeah, I can climb, but definitely not as flexible on that side as I used to be....probably going to take 4 or 5 more botls to get to the same height...honestly I'm thining of huffing my LW full length sticks around just for ease. Its reallt he side to side maneuvering that is killing me and stabilizing muscles in my foot. I"m totally a sitter, but moving around the tree for a shot and bracing for a shot using my left foot is pretty rough...I can do it, and adrenaline witll help, but....

and yes, leanign will hurt more, guess I was thinking(hoping) a larger platform would spread the weight/pressure out when maneuvering.

I’m an admitted ros guy also. My skyhooks are actually my favorite even compared to the famous squirrel steps.
I tried the platform when tethrd came out with the predator. I actually preferred a ring of steps for comfort. I just never got comfortable with my feet pressed together trying to sit. I just got the predator xl. To me it’s a huge improvement. How that transmits into comfort on your Achilles I don’t know. I’ve got a hand climber in the classifieds I’ll gladly cancel and send your way lust to give you a feel of the larger platforms. When you get through with it I can either post it for sale and let you ship it or you can send it back to me. I’d send you the xl but my son’s claiming it.

Thanks, I appreciate it--thats a very kind offer. I"ve got a windwalker still kicking around I might give a try tomorrow and see how it feels. I guess I"m feeling like at that point I might as well throw my RCH, or recon on and just hunt hybrid saddle style like I used to. Honestly, I might have to stand up and "move around")as much as you can on a windwalker) because it gets so stiff anyway... Long sits are just going to suck.

Hate that for you, man. It's hard to know for sure, but it seems like it might put less pressure on your heel to have your feet angled down on a Predator (or similar) platform instead of at a 90ish degree angle like on a ROS or some of the angled platforms. A JX3 Hybrid might also do the trick if you're just dying to saddle hunt. Not sure if swelling is a problem, but if so, you'll probably have to find a way to elevate your foot every now and then on longer sits to let the pressure go down.

I'm assuming its your left foot? Right handed shot or leftie? I ask because I think it might make a difference on the ability to move around the tree. I'm a right handed sitter who uses a platform. There's typically very little weight/pressure on my feet while sitting but I do kind of bend at the ankle (read tiptoe). I put my climbing stick on the backside of the tree and usually only walk around to my left if I need to hide behind the tree and shoot to my weak side. I do this by keeping most of my weight on my right foot on the platform and stepping to the stick with my left. That gets me around the tree. It might be doable.

Yeah, I was hoping the guidos would be the ticket and relieve enough pressure, but when pushing around the tree its hurting...

right handed shooter, left foot. Thanks, I"ll try some different ways to spin around the tree.

Sorry to hear about this VTbow that really blows! If it is near your back ankle which it sounds like it would be, I would think an angled platform like the OOAL Scout or Solo Scout would be the most comfortable option and provide the majority of your foot support with out the outer lip of the platform placing pressure on your injury area. It is always angled down and away but without being in your situation I wouldn't know for sure. Perhaps a Scout with a rigged piece of pipe insulation zip tied to it so that extra height and the angle of the scout are working together to keep most of your foot off of the platform and just a cushioned rim so only the ball of your foot and up to your toes are actually "on" the platform. Does that make any sense? You could even try one of those pool tubes for even greater cushion and added height off the platform. I think MTS Runner is using one camo'd up for a knee cushion and he's liking that. Just zip tie it next to the inner rim of the scout so that the inside edge still properly is in contact with the tree but gives you the necessary cushion and support.

MAkes sense, thanks. Just sitting there, I'm fine, but moving around the tree and holding myself in position is the part that sucks. i'm not sure I can sit/lean in my recon for too long, the guidos seems ok though. I might just have to put like 8 steps on a strap, and make a circular platform, ha!

Man I’m just still trying to get my foot in the door to shop in that private sportsman’s warehouse you have over there. I wonder if some kind of soft cast might make your time on stand bearable.

The warehouse is getting smaller, I promise... the boathouse, not so much:)

Thats a really good thought--It hadnt even entered my mind- or taping it in a certain way. My sister is a PT, I'll reach out, thanks for the idea.

U need a soft sac.....if u closer I let I try....sounds silly but u could go to the thrift store and buy crappy pillow and strap it to the tree....I did this before making the final version
