Oplux / rescue tech | Custom length 7mm vt prusik from Bluewater ropes.

A five over one Distel works well for me. I cut one today to find the minimal length that would work.

The final Distel was about 7".

Eye-to-eye length of the 7mm VT was 21".

Thanks! Unfortunately, a work crunch found me working the weekend. Probably same for next weekend. I’ll try to sneak out during the week and I’ll start with the 5 over 1 distel.

I'd be in for a couple of these double sewn eyes if this happens. Can you try out the Cosmo hitch with the Blue Water to see how it feels and what the length comes out to?

7mm is 87.5% of 8mm. Most sources for friction hitch safety/compatibility state the hitch line should be 60-75ish % of the mainline. I would definitely be more interested in reaching out to Sterling (6mm TRC) for the double sewn eye. Possibly Beal for the 5.5.
I understand the desire to keep the kN up there above 20, but I always have my friction hitch backed up anyway. It’s a trade off in benefits/risks for sure.

What's your backup? Just a knot in the tail end attached to LB loop?

Depends. If using a regular Oplux tether (rarely), I will tie the tag end in a loop and clip in to my carabiner for my bridge.

Most of the time I’m using 35’ of Oplux as my tether and rappel line, so I have a Beal jammy autoblock clipped in to my right side LB loop.

My apologies for not getting out to test length. I will do that this weekend. Work got crazy and I am finally able to catch my breath.

mtsrunner I believe I shared an image from Bluewater ropes hat shows the 7mm vt prusik to be good for 8 mm to 9.5 mm ropes.
That said, I am a hefty guy and I will be testing for slippage with a distel hitch.

Good deal. The pics in your original post did not load for me when I first read this.

Using just a length of cord and tying a stopper instead of tied, sewn, or spliced eyes, allows the hitch leg length to be adjustable. Plus the tender is part of the hitch.

It’s not that huge! 5.4mm V-TX from Sterling, the polyester only cover grabs better than those with Technora. Bluewater Titan cord is another that bites reliably on ropes with a Technora cover.

I did some more testing of polyester vs Technora hitch cord on a Technora cover rope. A couple of 6mm Cords, with 75% Technora- 25% polyester, needed an extra wrap to grab reliably each time, and as a result there was more friction when trying to slide the hitch. Edelrid 6mm Rap line grabbed each time with a 25% Technora- 75% polyester cover. Beal’s Kevlar cord with a nylon cover also bites like the polyester ones.
Also found that a technora cover hitch cord works well with polyester and nylon cords/ropes, the TRC even held on 7mm nylon accessory cord, not that it should be used for life support, just to show how well it works.

I just got one also, 33” is a lot to get rid of on a 8mm rope. It’s a very nice cord, very pliable, unlike other cords of this construction, maybe due to the short length of the braiding. This short braiding probably accounts for the low break strength also, it is comparable to nylon accessory cord. If the legs are long after tying the hitch, a classical workaround is to tie a half hitch with them below, on a Prusik below, but works with any hitch.
