Oplux / rescue tech | Custom length 7mm vt prusik from Bluewater ropes.

@sojourner what happened with this. I just bought a bluewater 7mm vt cord and wish is was a little shorter, maybe 22-24". I'm super interested in a shorter version but really don't want to cut the sewn eye off.

Cut one eye off, you won't regret it. Then you can adjust to whatever length you want (and you will adjust it a time or two after you initially set the length). See post 21 top of page 2.

Oh I saw that. My OCD went into hyperdrive. I could never live like that. :grimacing: would like to see TRC with sewn eyes. Anyone ever handle Sterling 6mm XTec, specs are burly?

The stitches can be cut, or it’s possible to pull the lock stitches out, if you can find the end, for a little more length.

7mm is 87.5% of 8mm. Most sources for friction hitch safety/compatibility state the hitch line should be 60-75ish % of the mainline. I would definitely be more interested in reaching out to Sterling (6mm TRC) for the double sewn eye. Possibly Beal for the 5.5.
I understand the desire to keep the kN up there above 20, but I always have my friction hitch backed up anyway. It’s a trade off in benefits/risks for sure.

Since you are using two lines, don't you double the kNs? For instance, if Oplux is 24.3 kN for MBS and TRC is 15.5 for the same, then isn't the TRC hitch actually stronger than the oplux in this application since each TRC leg is holding half my weight?

I did some more testing of polyester vs Technora hitch cord on a Technora cover rope. A couple of 6mm Cords, with 75% Technora- 25% polyester, needed an extra wrap to grab reliably each time, and as a result there was more friction when trying to slide the hitch. Edelrid 6mm Rap line grabbed each time with a 25% Technora- 75% polyester cover. Beal’s Kevlar cord with a nylon cover also bites like the polyester ones.
Also found that a technora cover hitch cord works well with polyester and nylon cords/ropes, the TRC even held on 7mm nylon accessory cord, not that it should be used for life support, just to show how well it works.

What are those gold tender rings and the hitches shown are tied to a figure 8 of some kind? Why not just a biner? I have an idea but would love to hear more about this set up. What sort of dark magic is this lol?

Sorry I haven’t updated on this. This year, thus far, has been a big nothing burger for me. First, overloaded in work, then week of bad fever for my son and i (did not test for COVID, so no idea if it was that or not), and now a gout flare up. I have been limping the last 10 days. I am hoping the late season will be better for me.

That said, I will pursue this with Bluewater when I can get back out and further test. If there is someone who wants to take up the cause right away, PM with your email address and I will forward the emails to you.

Again, sorry, but this year is not turning out the way I had hoped.

The rings are bronze bushings or 3/4” copper fitting, they help to tend the hitch, while being a part of it. The figure eights are a convenient and compact way to descend. But Oplux is too small for them to work, so better to use a carabiner.

Here's wishing you a great late season!

Check you email. Thx!

Got it. I'm going to follow up with Bluewater about a 22-24" (little fudge factor plus maybe folks are using 9mm something) 7mm VT prusik eye to eye sewn cord. I also sent an email to Sterling this weekend about the same for TRC but there is a lot to like about the BW cord. Will report back when I hear something. Thinking there was enough interest in 10 (min needed) but maybe as many as 20 7mm VT prusiks?

Yeah I am still in for 2 of them.

Thanks for taking the reigns on this one. Count me in for 2 of these at a minimum.

Thanks!
