But if your point is that among cheapest parts of most sticks is the tube then you are correct. If your point is that a good stick (say Beast, EWO, Shikar, etc) should only cost a little more than $20 I’m not sure I can get on board.

20$? No.. But why is it that a set of 3 Lone Wolfs or 4 Heliums can be had for 100-120$, but one Beast stick is 100$? Are you telling me there is 60-70$ more materials and labor in a single Beast stick?

the tubing at Lowe’s is 6063. I encourage you to not use it for building things to climb in trees.

you intuit some portion of markets setting prices somewhat correctly. The correct price is always what a willing buyer pays a willing seller. But you are ignoring years of data supporting the price of machined Metal goods.

I’m willing to bet you a set of beast sticks or a beast stand, that no more than 10% of the price (something like 50-60 bucks) is a result of “they’ll pay it” marketing. Metal costs money - that cost has risen considerably due to the issues stated well above. Machine time costs money. Components cost money. Engineering and testing cost money. All these things done in America cost more money. Add them up, mark it up 100-300%. Where in that range depends on how many customers you want.

not sure why this discussion is on a thread about a wild edge saddle well never see.

but I’m not sure you Have the whole hunting gear market pegged.

i should also add that ‘price gouging’ as you call it, or free market (somewhat) capitalism as it is more widely known, has lifted half the world out of abject poverty.

it’s hard to connect the dots, but these small gear companies continually raising prices, does more for poor Americans, and poor citizens of the world, than your donation at church or the food bank.

don’t complain about your share of the pie. Focus on making the pie bigger.

Economies of scale?

you should price making your own. I did. It was going to cost me over $600 for 4.

My wife is a seamstress. I had her look over some of these 200-300 saddles. She says it probably 15-20$ in material if you bought the material retail and not wholesale. And even then, you can likely make two with the materials as they are sold by the yard.
Having made a number of saddles myself, I would agree with your wife that the cloth/mesh and webbing can be purchased quite cheaply, BUT the buckles and rope used to build a saddle are more expensive. Check out the retail prices of 1” and 2” load bearing buckles like the Raptor or Cobra - generally in the $20-$35 range each and there are 3 of them on most commercial saddles. An amsteel bridge and prussiks will be another $15 retail, even a little more for Oplux and TRC.

Materials add up fast for a DIY saddle. Still not in the $200-300 range though!

There is liability insurance which the companies have to get to be sure to have in case of lawsuits. I can not say the small pop up custom shops have that? Employees to pay, testing costs (again not so sure little companies are doing this), rent, etc .... my point being there are hidden costs that add up rather quickly when you own a company.
If you ask me, anyone selling saddles to customers without having insurance is playing with fire to make a few bucks.

Last year I tried my hand at making a DIY Shikar style stick for one sticking. Someone asked me if it was "an economical endeavor". Attached is the link to my response. Summary is that it cost me about 1.5x what a new Shikar would have before you consider my time invested. Raw material costs are really only a small part of the equation.

Hawk sticks are extruded beams and cast steps. Lone wolf's have cast steps. They literally make hundreds at a time. Beast sticks and other high end sticks have components made of machined 6061 aluminum. Beast sticks are drilled for weight. Shikars are fluted for weight. Machining takes skilled operators. Usually several diff processes to get the desired results. Shikars are all sandblasted then powder coated. So yes. And there is still probably less profit in the higher end stick than a set of helium's

Because people keep asking silly questions and making uneducated statements.

I use WE steps and had no idea that they made saddles. I’m out of the loop!

I always get a kick out of the people who complain about a company’s profit margins from price gouging and never see them create a company to fix their said problem.

WTH? Since when do people have to start their own company for their complaint to be valid?

U ever complain about your car, so you built your own?
Ever complain about gas, so you started your own oil company?
Ever complain about the president, so you ran and became one?

There is a reason why there is a massive and thriving DIY saddle hunting community. Its because its not difficult and the alternatives are way over priced..

Quite literally one of the dumbest arguments ive ever heard..
I dont expect to hear back from you, since you cant complain about my opinion since you've never been me..

It’s ok to complain about the price of something but to complain about the current market because you believe the price the company charges is mostly based on raw materials is the most asinine thing I’ll probably read today and I read a lot. I could paint a mural on a wall made of solid gold and it would probably be worth less than a painting made by Picasso on a sheet of loose leaf paper using water colors.

FYI Beast stands are made in America.
Yes sir you are correct and I am fully aware of that fact.
But my best guess is at least 70% of all types of hunting equipment gear and clothing aren't made in USA and IMHO accordingly are WAAAAAAY over priced
