Lol. Good to know that my countless number of pass throughs and about 97% recovery rate over the past decade alone only gets a grade of a "D".

This has almost reached a cult-level status. People just gulp that kool-aid and spend that money and keep clicking and clicking and clicking. Exactly what these people want.
Who are the people getting exactly what they want from this? Are arrow companies in cohorts with Dr Ashby? How does someone make more money buying heavy arrows vs light arrows?

I definitely snorted the dust and drank the kool-aid 2-3 years ago. I'm going into my 5th year of hunting and wanted to tinker with my set up after getting **** penetration my first two years. To preface, my draw is 26.5" which blows, but here is my experience:

Year 1; 400 gr with expandable 60lb draw, shot 30yds at a doe and got like 8" of penetration, luckily dropped her
year 2; 425 gr with stinger 60lb draw, shot 3 deer sub 10 yds barely got pass throughs
year 3; bumped up to 588 gr and switched to cutthroat single bevel 64lb draw, shot a doe at 20 yds with a complete pass through and buried in the dirt 5 yds past where she stood. this made me a believe.
year 4; 520 gr with cutthroat, took a **** shot (not happy about) on a deer 64 lb draw, had to make a follow up through the front of chest from the ground at 20 yds, blew through the entire length of the body.

I think I found a happy medium and could probably go a little lighter but I'm confident with what I have which I think is important. I think the bump in weight is important for people with short ass draws like myself.

He also does several other heads. It’s not just the kudu. He performs the test with the same set up each time

I’m similar. 62lbs 27.5” draw. 509 grain. Iron will single bevel head. Last year I shot a 584 grain arrow with single bevel but trajectory suffered

It's not just heavier arrows. It's also heavier broadheads, inserts, and weights. Huge industry. And people keep buying more and more as they chase these heavier and heavier arrow setups. Somebody wants to go heavier because of all the hype so the go to 550gn, then they need 600, now 750, 800, now they need even more FOC, and on and on. The gotta keep up with the Joneses. People that were spending maybe $100-200 a year on their arrows setups are now spending three times that or more. So the industry pushes all the ridiculous hype so they can sell more product, especially since the "heavy" components come at a premium. And then all these heavy arrow "influencers" push it more and more as the hype cycles around and they get more money from clicks and advertising, so they push even harder. It's just a big ridiculous loop.

TL;DR

Capitalism, on a foundation of virtue signaling.

Also largely responsible for your ability to complain about it on a magic pocket brick, and every other wonderful thing in your life.

WRONG! I found what arrow weight/spine, Insert weight and broadhead weight works best for me out of my bow and haven't changed a thing since then. Also, the last deer I shot went about 40 yards and piled up within sight.

So back to the fairy dust... Anyone try some of the tapered arrows out there to help get a little higher FOC?

Haven’t bashed anyone at all. I’ve simply shared my thoughts and presented logical arguments. This is an Internet forum. Expect to find differing opinions and conflicting ideas. My posts are completely inline with the topic of the thread, just happens to be a contrarian stance to the subject. If you want to live in an echo chamber of people only agreeing with your own thoughts and ideas, spending time on internet forums may be a bad choice

I can confirm that a 500 grain arrow is in fact bad medicine for small game. Is it needed for skwerls or rabbits? About as much as a slap chop for dicing vegetables.

I'm just saying...if u trying to get it point across maybe shouldn't talk down to peeps.....

What head are you using? I’d love a 1.5” 2 blade

The Grizzlystik Overkill 1.5” 2 blades are pretty wicked and reasonably priced. I shot an axis doe with one a couple of years ago and she died within 40 yards.

Shot a doe in the spine with a grizzly stick last year. Was 20 ft up and she was about 3 yards from the tree. Basically pinned her to the ground with it. I got them out of their clearance pool and they shot really good out of my bow. Just can’t justify how expensive they are to get more of them.

I have to disagree with Spartan on the spending money part. I would say over time I spend less than you do. I use fairly cheep arrows (Easton 6mm @ $10 each) with stock inserts. My broadheads are 200gn iron will. They are resharpenable and come with a lifetime warranty. What am I spending endless amounts of money on? I appreciate your insight and constructive criticism but I think we got the point the first 2 or three posts. Your trying to talk us out of heavy arrows and we’re all like “ shoot whatever you want and makes you happy “. I personally backed down from 670is to 530 for trajectory reasons but if I could pull 70-80lbs I would go back up some.

You're really reaching there. And you're making a big inference which is simply untrue.

I shared my thoughts, opinions and observations which are, again, inline with the subject of this thread.

Very surprised to see trigger warning cards being thrown out here by me simply voicing a contrary opinion.

Thicker skins.

I think that the percentage of guys who are going to go heavier/high FOC are a very small niche of the overall arrow market. None, and I mean none of the people I know who bow hunt even worry about it. They still shoot their bows a week before season and grab a few arrows the bow shop made for them and go. They also invariably tell me about the ones that they stuck and couldn't find. Most of the time if it's a doe they just shrug it off and go on. If it was a good buck they cry about it some. It's not enough though to make them put in any time or effort to switch to a better setup.

I just don't see it as a huge industry. It's kinda like saddle hunting. It's a very small percentage of guys out of the huge numbers of guys using ladder stands and climbers and blinds, etc. that saddle hunt. Same with FOC and heavier arrows. A small group of people are going their own way after having some bad experiences. I don't see it as one or two social influencers. Dr. Ashby has been doing this research since the Apple 1 desktop came out. It's hardly new.
