Iowa Scouting Trip July/August 2022/Sept

Well here’s the humbling story regarding Issachar. Nov 1st I didn’t go out for an all day sit, in fact, I was headed to state ground for a mid day to dark sit until I talked with my brother on the phone that morning about going back to my lease property. Well he convinced me to let the rut activity to kick in and the bucks would be up cruising looking for does. He was convinced that even though we had 11 cell cameras out the bucks just weren’t walking thru those areas. Well placing them on scrapes and around there bedding areas has always produced for me. The great lesson I can tell you is I will never put so much trust in generating buck pictures ever again. Basically he told me to set up on some scrapes I found and head out early for a long sit. So that’s what I did. When I got to our lease property 12:30am the farmer was combining the corn and I drove my ebike down to the spot where I was going to walk into a large piece of hardwoods. When the farmer got really near to me in the combine he stopped and said theres a big buck right here in the corn - so I said where and he pointed his finger to the corn right in front of me. I grabbed my bow off the bike and ran down along the edge of the corn and all I saw was a good buck standing there thinking he was hid - I just instinctively drew my bow put on the goody box I let it go. The buck went a short distance and was down for the count, the farmer and I walked over and when I looked at his rack I couldn’t believe it was my Target buck Issachar - I yelled out his rightful name and the farmer said what’s that- I explained it’s a biblical name. While we were talking I mention the lack of resident bucks and he looked at me and said well things don’t get started until Nov around here and it’s been that way since he could remember. This ravine travels over 10 miles so bucks have bigger roaming territory’s than I’m use to hunting. Our conversation opened up a different point of view compared to hunting AG properties back home. These deep ravines and topography give these deer many routes to and from one area to the Nxt. I hunted most of the month of October and never laid eyes on Issachar. But he was there living right under my nose hiding. I believe my frustration these last 10 days was because I trusted the intel off the cameras more than anything else. Cameras are a tool but there not the panicea either. Really though it’s not how I thought I would ever shoot that buck but God serves it up the way he wants it. He’s 23.5 inches wide and the bonus was that the nite of celebration one of the Nieghbor’s gave me his 2.5 yr left side shed I’m so thankful this season God is GoodView attachment 75208
Congrats on a hard earned buck! I have a nice buck that was clockwork regular & dropped off ( saw him yesterday on a trail that’s 10yds above that camera) so I agree that sometimes we put too much faith on camera intel.

Congrats!

Congrats.
Corn still being in can really impact deer movement also. With it being so dry in iowa this year a lot of farmers left corn in longer to take advantage of natural drying with propane costs so high. There was a lot of corn left in later this year, which can keep the deer out of the woods and in the corn, as you witnessed first hand.

Another Iowa buck down. I debated holding out for the giant I have on camera, but this guy gave me the perfect set up. I also wasn't going to be able to get out again until next Sunday.
I still haven't made it to my public spot to check what's on those cameras.

Congratulations brother - that’s an awesome buck

I sure do like this thread. It makes me want to start applying for a Iowa tag. Especially when Sureshot said that one isn’t the giant one.

Apply my friend…you won’t regret it…it’s tuff hunting, but your going to see mature bucks during November. I hunted hard during October and saw many 2yr old bucks but the sign was there. Large tracks that never walked in front of my cameras but they are chasing right now as I’m writing this reply. Do it just start accumulating your preference points

For the record, I've never had one like this on camera before, but here's the giant one. I usually move from my private spot to public when the rut gets going, but I had so many good deer on my private spot I haven't even checked cameras on the public yet.

So glad for you @Silvio especially with the hardships you faced head on last season with your health. You have come back with a vengeance brother. As Rothaar said it in his second book, and as you have in your signature, The magic of the whitetail has enriched your life for sure this season!!

Holy ****. I'd never sleep if I had one like that on cam. Goodness!

I've never debated letting a 150" buck walk by until Monday morning. I debated quickly and still shot, but it was a hard decision.

It’s been a great season…a spent lot of time scouting and hunting by myself…it gave me time to get deep in the word and persevere a health issue and get back out there to do what I love. Archery has been in my blood since I was 8ths old and the sport has always been rewarding and mainly fun. Saddle hunters are work horses at heart and can harvest a buck without all the groomed paths and food plots. I’m glad to be here sharing and helping…I don’t have all the answers regarding Whitetails but my hunting experience over the years has honed my skills to out smart these bucks some of the times. As we know they win most of the time that’s what keeps us charged up to keep trying…thank you for the great comment

Indeed.

So I've been trying to record date, time of day and wind direction as I get picks of bucks. So I just got one in this morning at 7:22am and he was heading in back to a ridge on a south, south east wind. I'm thinking he is using his nose to scent check for does OR he is heading back to bed on a nose wind. To hunt this buck would you plan on a pattern right now or just continue to set up downwind of doe bedding while the rut is on. I'm trying to inventory my pics compared to wind direction to see if there is any reasonable correlation. Let me know your thoughts.

With my pictures I try and keep track of movement and wind direction…I’m about to make my first move on Freight Train here back at home for the first time…I’m more concerned with breeding scrapes located close to bedding areas…remember don’t give up on a crosswind that cuts your stand location closer than you like…this buck cruising phase will provide good opportunities for sure but get as close to bedding as possible that’s where does will keep running circles like a rabbit
