We move here to Missouri from Kansas ain't never had ticks like this. What does everyone use?

Agreed. Permethrin works great. I use the Sawyers or mix it up in a pump sprayer and dose all my gear like turkey seat etc. I treat the clothes with Sawyers. I also spray around the house with a stiff dose for good measure.

I use Repel Deet 40% for my clothing also. I will spray that on my skin around my ankles, wrists and rub it on the back of my neck. I don't put the permethrin on my skin.

I swear on my Childrens life this works…A guy who cut right of ways for a living told me the trick. A shot of vinegar a night. I have had ticks crawl on me, but I haven’t had a tick bite since I started. I start 2 weeks before deer season, and 2 weeks before Turkey season. I do still spray my clothes with Sawyers just to keep from bringing them in the house.

Permethrin is the key. But sawyers is expensive. Buy it concentrated and mix in a spray bottle. It’s way cheaper and will last multiple seasons. You can make 50 bottles for the price of one or two Sawyer bottles!IMG_4481.png

Stay tuned to the end of this one! I hate DEET and have another reason to stick with permethrin and not use it.

Yeah, I hate Deet too but I use it in conjunction with Permethrin to ward off not only ticks but also mosquitos and chiggers. Deet is nasty but I don't want to put permethrin on my skin.

I’m considering joining the permethrin club. Meanwhile, I use electrical tape to cinch my pants to my boots and have at least one upper layer tucked into my pants. When I get home / back to the truck, I strip down and put the clothes somewhere separate from me and family. I immediately shower when I get home.

Wait until the seed ticks get bad in late July/August. Permethrin treat your clothes, apply Deet heavily(I'll take cancer later over tick fever now). Sawyers is the easy solution, Tractor Supply or whatever local farm store you have should have a more concentrated brand you can dilute down and get a lot more bang for your buck. Some of the concentrated brands of Permethrin have an oily smell to them that lingers for quite a while.

Down here, permethrin also keeps mosquitoes at bay for the most part and I never get chiggers using it. I refuse to hunt early season anyway due to the temps, so I don’t have to contend with either of them except during turkey season. I used to use a thermacell when I did. Agree with not putting permethrin on skin and I only it when fully dried on clothing, which cannot penetrate skin after bonding to clothing and dried. Never spray it on you directly or your clothes.

If you're going to dilute your own, which is a lot cheaper, look for a concentrate without petroleum distillates. That's what gives it the nasty smell.

I permethrin all my shoes (including my running shoes and mountain biking shoes) and hat in summer and use deet on my legs in the summer. For scouting I have a set of cloths treated with permethrin. And for fall season I hang everything I’m going to wear for the next 6 weeks up and spray it all, including socks.

It should be noted that permethrin is toxic to cats when it’s wet, so if you have furry friends don’t let them be around it until it dries. Mainly an issue with my boots that I treat in the summer.

Permethrin and DEET. And I sprayed my lawn and garden with the Cutter tick killer. Good tip to treat your truck upholstery, I hadn't thought of that.

My brought caught lyme in KS several years ago, and my wife caught it in WI before that. Both of their lives were permanently changed by it. We are very sensitive to tick-borne illness in my house. I've got 2 pairs of trousers that I alternate for yardwork, both are treated with permethrin, and neither comes in the house, except to go into the washing machine. I wear rubber boots, which I treat with DEET and permethrin, and tuck my trouser cuffs into them. At work I have tick gaiters, which are treated with permethrin. I spray my work gloves with permethrin. I still find ticks on me from time to time but this regimen helps tremendously, and so far this year I haven't had any ticks embedded.

Yeah, it only took me a few decades to realize why tackle boxes so often had melted plastic worms inside.
