Any recommendations on size for a tarp? I know there are specialized rain flies. I'd like to try a regular hardware store poly tarp for now. I'm thinking a 10x12 tarp over a ridge line staked at four corner should do it?
You can buy or make a bug net sock that fits over the hammock. Also, you can buy a hammock with the net that can be zip off. With both systems you will need a ridge line. Never needed the tie outs but that is always an option. Imo the best sleep you can get in the woods by far. Good luckWas about to post a new thread asking who hammock camps but I reckoned this crowd doesn't mind sleeping in an oversized saddle!
For our 10th anniversary my wife and I are planning a camping road trip next month. I've always enjoyed camping but my back hated sleeping on the ground. Last summer I experimented with an inflatable mattress in my ENO-style hammock and wow... best sleep I ever had in the woods. Really looking forward to trying a whole trip in one.
You folks with bug screens, do you tie a short guy line directly onto your hammock straps, or do you run a separate guy line on the trees? I am soon to buy a bug screen and have been seeing both methods. I figure a separate guy line could also serve as a ridge for a rain tarp?
I did this for a year or so. It's perfect and cheap, especially if you're car camping and not carrying the gear far.
I later picked up a "FREE SOLDIER" tarp on Amazon that I used for a couple of years. As time has gone on, I fid myself hiking further and further into the woods to camp so I've started down the "gram weenie" path and am moving to lighter gear these days.
Yeah I can see that this could be another deep rabbit hole. The cool thing is a number of things I’ve learned about knots, ropes, materials, loads, etc. from saddle hunting seem applicable to hammocking as well. I stumbled across Dutchware.com some years back and was so confused. Now, it’s funny how knowledge compounds itself.Anyway - it's another journey like saddle hunting. You'll try a bunch of stuff and have fun doing it, and at some point begin to settle on what you like.
How long is the EWO hammock? I could not find that mentioned in the description, not that it matters too much since I already bought it, lol.I forgot about this thread. Spent many nights in a hammock since and plan on using it this fall in CO. I ended up getting this hammock https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B088SBDG83?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
I upgraded the suspension to this
Cinch Buckle Suspension
CHECK CURRENT LEAD TIMES HERE. Made to order - all fabrics and components are purchased for these hammocks as orders are received. Easy to use and almost infinitely adjustable, no wonder cinch buckle style suspensions are so popular in the hammock community. This is the same suspension we use...hemlockmountainoutdoors.com
The same company I bought the suspension from is having a sale on their hammocks at the moment. https://hemlockmountainoutdoors.com/products/redtail-hammock?variant=43108965810410
I agree with whoever said it above. Get at least an 11’ hammock. Especially, if you are approaching 6’ tall.

Thanks, I'm right at 6 feet so it should be fine. Maybe I can show as much restraint with the hammocks as I have with saddles. I've only purchased 2, sold one and made several. Not sure. I have one, or I should say had one. My 14 yr old stole it. He likes it better than mine because it’s wider. He’s 5’10” and sleeps well in it.
The EWO is a good hammock for the price. It won’t be your last though. Hammocks are like saddles, you will want to try them all.
I almost bought that hemlock mountain hammock when I linked it. Lol
and made several.
Probably a 2 panel, lol. You’ll be sewing up a hammock by October.
