Lets talk hammocks

@Marmuzz I have a DIY bug net for the hammock I made and I have a zip in bug net that came with a hammock I bought, some model Warbonnet.

The DIY was made large enough to hang from my ridgeline and with a cinchable (adjustable bunjee cord) hole on each end. The net has an opening that stays underneath the hammock when you’re in it and this forms the seal. Works like a charm.

ETA: the Warbonnet, ridge runner I believe, has a double bottom and I keep an inflatable recon pad in there. Heavenly. I have this hammock on a stand in my house and sleep in it year round.

Yeahh EWO with mosquito net and outer blanket for winter is hard to beat for the buck. I’ve had a night cat tent hammock with about 7 uses so far and I like it also but I don’t feel like it’ll last but I can’t say just yet.

I wish new tribe had brought back the tree boat hammock system. Those things were nice

Any recommendations on size for a tarp? I know there are specialized rain flies. I'd like to try a regular hardware store poly tarp for now. I'm thinking a 10x12 tarp over a ridge line staked at four corner should do it?

As rambotogo mentioned, come check out hammockforums dot net if you really want to go down the rabbit hole.
I started with Amazon hammocks, then picked up a Warbonnet Blackbird (original) secondhand on the hammock forums. After having an integrated bugnet, I'll never go back.
My kids and I are really into it, so I've also tried out the Dutchware Chameleon and ended up back at a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC.
I personally prefer a double layer, just because I do not like the stretch a single layer gives me. I use an underquilt - SimplyLightDesigns makes a neat one where you can add a second insulation pad, so one underquilt can serve multiple temp ranges.
An asymmetrical hammock with a structural ridgeline will allow you to get a flatter lay when you lay diagonally in it, but you'll need to figure out how you want to lay - they even make bridge hammocks if you're a back sleeper. My youngest prefers to lay in his either in a fetal position or like a banana, but I prefer a diagonal lay so I'm flatter in the hammock. If my back was 10 years old again I probably wouldn't care :)
Anyway - it's another journey like saddle hunting. You'll try a bunch of stuff and have fun doing it, and at some point begin to settle on what you like.

I did this for a year or so. It's perfect and cheap, especially if you're car camping and not carrying the gear far.
I later picked up a "FREE SOLDIER" tarp on Amazon that I used for a couple of years. As time has gone on, I fid myself hiking further and further into the woods to camp so I've started down the "gram weenie" path and am moving to lighter gear these days.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this yet, but if they have it’s worth saying twice.

ALWAYS look up. Don’t hang from dead trees, and don’t hang from trees with widow makers.

I hammock camped for many years, look up is the single most important piece of advice.

Was about to post a new thread asking who hammock camps but I reckoned this crowd doesn't mind sleeping in an oversized saddle!

For our 10th anniversary my wife and I are planning a camping road trip next month. I've always enjoyed camping but my back hated sleeping on the ground. Last summer I experimented with an inflatable mattress in my ENO-style hammock and wow... best sleep I ever had in the woods. Really looking forward to trying a whole trip in one.

You folks with bug screens, do you tie a short guy line directly onto your hammock straps, or do you run a separate guy line on the trees? I am soon to buy a bug screen and have been seeing both methods. I figure a separate guy line could also serve as a ridge for a rain tarp?
You can buy or make a bug net sock that fits over the hammock. Also, you can buy a hammock with the net that can be zip off. With both systems you will need a ridge line. Never needed the tie outs but that is always an option. Imo the best sleep you can get in the woods by far. Good luck

Well dang it, this thread just cost me some money lol. I got an EWO double hammock and the bug net. I've been thinking about a hammock for several years for early season naps back at the truck between hunts.

I have a free soldier tarp. Would recommend. Not the lightest but very effective for me

Yeah I can see that this could be another deep rabbit hole. The cool thing is a number of things I’ve learned about knots, ropes, materials, loads, etc. from saddle hunting seem applicable to hammocking as well. I stumbled across Dutchware.com some years back and was so confused. Now, it’s funny how knowledge compounds itself.

I forgot about this thread. Spent many nights in a hammock since and plan on using it this fall in CO. I ended up getting this hammock https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B088SBDG83?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

I upgraded the suspension to this

The same company I bought the suspension from is having a sale on their hammocks at the moment. https://hemlockmountainoutdoors.com/products/redtail-hammock?variant=43108965810410

I agree with whoever said it above. Get at least an 11’ hammock. Especially, if you are approaching 6’ tall.

How long is the EWO hammock? I could not find that mentioned in the description, not that it matters too much since I already bought it, lol.

Not sure. I have one, or I should say had one. My 14 yr old stole it. He likes it better than mine because it’s wider. He’s 5’10” and sleeps well in it.

The EWO is a good hammock for the price. It won’t be your last though. Hammocks are like saddles, you will want to try them all.

I almost bought that hemlock mountain hammock when I linked it. Lol

Thanks, I'm right at 6 feet so it should be fine. Maybe I can show as much restraint with the hammocks as I have with saddles. I've only purchased 2, sold one and made several.
