LIVE from the Saddle 2024

I’m hanging now. Found a dead head unfortunately as I scouted earlier. Drove to a different spot and walked a long ways. Got to where I thought would be good, came over the hill, tails everywhere. 12-15+. At least one good one. Lots of little bucks. They had no idea what happened and only ran 100 or so yards before settling down. I tried to cut a little distance off whenever the wind blew until I found a good tree if they retrace their steps. Watched a couple bed and a couple spar as I quietly got dressed at the base of my tree. Climbed as quiet as I could. We’ll see if they come back or if team 11 already recruited them to the dark side IMG_3150.jpegIMG_3151.jpegIMG_3152.jpeg

I made a rookie mistake. There I am, texting my wife, when I heard leaves rustling… i look up and see a small spike crossing at 30 yards. He was in my small shot window as I first saw him, and he quickly made his way out of it. I didn’t have another shot opportunity and he was the only deer I saw tonight. Maybe he’ll make a good one in four years?

Also, this was the smallest tree I’ve climbed all season; riding out the wind gusts in it was fun.

Jumped five on the way in which is 5x as many as I’ve seen the last couple sits. I’m hoping they browse their way back through later.

One sticked up this one instead of 2tc. I wasn’t sure what tree I’d be in so brought it with me and decided why not. Made it up in 5 or 6 moves to 30’. Still need practice with it and still think 2tc is easier.

Managed to uncle my pack while I was climbing. It was hooked to my rappel rope loop but the loop must have twisted around the hook and pulled just the wrong way when I pulled up. The only two things I’d like to have from it are my rangefinder and my hat. And I can live without the rangefinder but the sun is a bugger. Fortunately todays 44 feels outright balmy after the cold we’ve had lately.

Also found a clever hiooking for the sys strap. The bow has to be in the little outside branch but I needed more strap for gear.

Turns out this is not an unsolvable problem. The whole reason I have a niteize s-beaner missing a gate is because I’ve done this before. That was earlier this year and I was desperate for the water in my pack so broke the beaner and used my rappel rope to hook it up. I’m now sitting better in a hat with no gear on the ground and all distances ranged (I would have been good with my estimations).

Hang your bow with one of the S-biners for long enough to use the hero clip to fish up your pack.

Yeah that would work too. Noted for the future.

Sepaately, just had a 4 pt come through at 40 yards. Of course hunting does but at least he showed me what trail he liked and where he crosses the ditch. Already got a tree picked out for next time that’s 60 yards further down.

Going out for a final morning sit tomorrow. I want to get into a tree but the weather might be weird. Forecast is rain until 6 Am, then winds in the 20s MPH the rest of the day. But it is what it is! All signs tell me to sit on the ground, but I'm fighting it.
Yep, I wanted to go tonight but I don't know if my saddle is strong enough in THIS wind!
