Rules For Thee Not For Me (Outlaw Thread)

Here in Duluth, I participate in the city hunt and when a deer crosses into someone's property that they don't give you permission to enter, you can call a police and they have the State's right to escort you to retrieve the State's property (deer). A landowner has no right, here, to stop you if you are accompanied by a cop or state trooper.

That’s a great law. Don’t get to say that very often nowadays.

Whew! Made it thru all this (minus the long winded, no paragraph break replies). Couple things come to mind that I will publicly discuss.

First, there’s a reason duck hunters like folks that can’t shoot well.

Second, I trespass for a living. As a surveyor I’m required by law to trespass while at the same time I’m offered zero legal protection from trespass laws.

The Michigan verbiage . . . I'm sure the intent is to limit road hunting and give the CO's a means to ticket someone they suspect of road hunting but didn't actually catch in the act of taking game.

The only exception is a handgun legally carried under the authority of a valid CPL.

Curious how other Michiganders are transporting ammo? Unloaded magazine. Do you take the whole box or put them in your pocket or what? I don't drive around with my gun loaded, and they are always in a case driving. But I had missed empty magazines. I was just zipping them in a separate pocket from the gun but loaded. Guess I should quit that, cuz yeah I take the firearms laws more seriously

I case the firearm and put the full magazine and the individual round to be chambered in the separate zippered pouch on the case. As long as its fully unloaded I've never had a problem with that arrangement. The exception is my concealed carry handgun . . . its always loaded and never cased. I've never had a problem with that either. In fact I can't recall an instance where a CO (or police officer for that matter) has ever even asked to see my CPL after my disclosure that I'm carrying.

In MN I keep my ammo either in my bino pouch, or on a butt cuff on the rifle. Single-shot NEF, lever-action Marlin, and surplus Mauser. State statute requires "unloaded and cased", but doesn't stipulate that ammunition can't be stored in the case with the firearms. Does MI have such a stipulation? What about a small zipper pouch, like a pencil case?

The Armed Fisherman on YouTube is making some $ off doing just this and filming the interactions with cops who do not know their own laws.
Ok....I doubt it was this same utube guy, never seen his videos, but I'm assuming this is 1 of those guys who goes fishing with long rifles slung across their backs?.....I've seen some of these yahoos in person. This is dumb imo and just draws negative attention. I could hear bits and pieces of what passers bye were saying and it was nothing positive. Attention seekers. I carry while fishing and hiking but families aren't scared. I'm all for his doing what he's doing but imo he isn't helping our cause at all. Mines hidden but if u gotta carry it out in the open a holstered sidearm is much less intimidating to normies. I had to explain it to my kid who was uncomfortable in that situation and she's been shooting guns since she was little and seeing guns is a daily thing for her

I agree. I have guns. Not scared of guns. Generally support gun ownership for responsible people.

In 2023, open carry of a longarm (really open carry in general) in public raises concerns for me. You're halfway to starting a confrontation that you know can end in killing somebody. Justify it as "making a statement" or "exercising a right" if you want to, but it's just irresponsible.

I've got a friend who's pretty hardcore into firearms and competitive shooting. Way more into guns than me. It's been kinda sad to watch him migrate out of the hobby as it's become more politically charged and attracted more weirdos.

The key word there for me is "responsible". IMO you're not being responsible if you're out trying to provoke a reaction while carrying a potentially deadly weapon. I'm obviously not against gun ownership or carrying, I've mentioned I'm a CPL holder many times here. I just don't see any advantage to advertising that you're carrying short of trying to scare or provoke someone. To me it gives all of us a bad reputation (one bad apple can spoil a whole bunch).

I don't mind open carry of pistols. Currently u can't here unless hunting/fishing/hiking and that's how I grew up. I moved to Tennessee that allows and the very first person I encountered pulling into town was an A/C tech at the restaurant I stopped at with a tool bag and a side arm...law enforcement does...peeps can get used to that pretty quick imo.....but the big ar with every doohicky accessory hanging off or taticool shotgun makes this gun owner/daily carry have a bad taste in his mouth.

The fricking guns they were carrying were interfering with the act of casting and reeling in hahahahaha

I can open carry and go walk all the beautiful trails our state has to offer with HD supper awesome cameras and I'll had 10 subscribers cause there's nobody out there to encounter and get the reaction......ahhhhh... but the pier, were hundreds of peeps will walk by in an hour on a busy weekend....that entertainment right there.

I don't know about the "armed fisherman" but the guys I saw didn't catch nuffin before we left.....losers

Bingo.

I worked a gun counter for several years and have heard all kinds of silliness justifying open carry. In my experience, it all boils down to folks who think they're small trying to feel big or LARPing for people who don't know what LARP is but would ridicule it if they did.

It's like I told one guy who came in asking about a shower holster for his pistol in case somebody broke in while he was showering. First off, that's not gonna happen. Secondly, if you really think it is gonna happen, you'd be better off moving before it happened than prepping for it.

Shower beers and shower guns don’t mix

I'd think a locked bathroom door and a pistol in the bathroom should be enough for even the most paranoid person.

In theory, open carry is a fine idea. In urban or populated areas; in the woods is another dynamic entirely. In theory, carrying openly and being friendly and polite and smiling at everyone and gently and respectfully discussing Constitutional rights is persuasive. In theory, rights atrophy if not exercised. In practice, you have a pack of heavily-armed, highly-confrontational characters of questionable sobriety who seem itching to pick a fight with the cops or passers-by or busloads of nuns and orphans, and who cannot understand how their actions are counterproductive.

And homeboy who wanted a shower holster should just plan to make do with his poop knife.

I'm pro open carry because I don't have to worry about "printing" now. I still carry concealed because I don't want to advertise. If I am doing outdoor stuff I just carry a 22lr for the unlucky squirrel or bullfrog that may become a meat snack.
