1-stick cam cleat question

I am trying out 1-sticking and would like to know if you tie off the cam cleat when you reach hunting height? Do you add a half hitch or double half hitch?

I just got my 1-stick today and the rope seems to pop out of the cam cleat quite easy. I have not tried it climbing or under load but just messing with it, it appears to disengage easily. I'm sure under load it locks in tight but was not sure if I should tie off at full height.

I don’t, but you should do whatever makes you feel safe. And always be tethered in.

Do what makes you safe, but why would you tie off at height and not tie off on every move, if you think it is going to come undone??? I one stick with a cam cleat. Once you put a load on the clear it does not release easily.

First season saddle hunting and I one-sticked pretty much all season. I just looped the rest of my rope mod over my platform when I got to height. Rope never disengaged once for me this season.

I do feel there’s a difference in the Muddy factory cam cleat, versus the Harken or Schafer.. I’m using a older Muddy pro as my 1-stick, had several instances last year where the factory cleat was slipping. Switched it out for a Schafer, rock solid.

When climbing, I am on the stick ~30 seconds and climb directly up the aider onto the stick. When positioned at full height, I am on the top step platform for many hours moving from side to side putting pressure on different angles of the stick. I thought it would be good to put in a half hitch. But, I have never used a cam cleat so I thought I would ask.

I have not had an issue. I don't do anything other than tuck it out of the way so my foot won't yank it out or something when climbing up onto the platform. You are tethered in anyway right?

I’m using 3/16” amsteel and the Schafer cam cleat really smashes and bites it. It doesn’t want to pop out even when I pull on it straight out away from the tree for example. Just a little tug to the left and it comes out easy and quietly.
That is also why I like a lot of angle on my cord. I can pick it up far enough to release the cam ez instead of trying to yank it out…..yanking is not fluid, smooth, nor stealthy

Is it a muddy cam cleat?

Harken cam cleat 150. It was noisy when I removed the rope, I watched a Youtube video on how to quiet the device, which helped. I will be climbing with it today for the first time.

I have had a similar experience

Muddy factory cam cleat bolts can come loose with use. As the bolts loosen up the cams do not preform as they should causing the rope to slip. You should always check the bolts and as a precaution. Loctite the bolts to prevent them from backing out.

I modded a a hawk mini with a cam cleat and rope from Dan-O and for the first few climbs I would tie a half hitch on each move. As I got more comfortable with it I would only tie a half hitch when I was at hunting height....now I dont tie it off at all and have not had any problems - granted I am tied in at all times and slide my tether each move so I guess I am comfortable in the fact that if it were to slip or even kick out (only had 1 kick out at ground level during my first testing of using it as a 1 stick).
