First time climbing with the 1 stick/aider method today, and everything went great. However, For my 1st tree, I pick probably the worst tree ever. It was a paper birch, multi crotch, 20* leaning tree. I was using the quick link for the tree/rappel tether, but man, it was annoying having to screw and unscrew the quicklink to get past limbs. The poll is just curiosity on if you guys are concerned with the side load potential when climbing the tree. I just think the carabiner would be easi

I don't know what a quick link is, but I have a sewn eye, or tie a figure 8 on a bite to girth hitch tether or reppel rope. Crossing branches and crotches is slightly annoying, but I reccomend using linemans belt while on your stick, then advance tether beyond obstacle, then move up.

He's probably running 30' of rope so girth hitching is out of the question. The quick link is the "loop" instead of a girth hitch. Open link and slide rope in instead of running entire length thru eye.

How do you tie the quick link in?

Is that the same as a poachers knot? Also, I believe a figure 8 on a bite to be a good knot for triangle quick link. Please dont quote me on that as I am finding more and more things that are unsafe that seemed to be the standard for saddle hunting in times past.

I’ve used a carabiner all season and it’s great.... except for the message above now making me think I’ve been an idiot

I use a figure 8 on a bight and it works and is safe. The only problem with that is its loose on the link and it can fall off when its open which would force you to have to girth hitch it. Ask me how i know.... im switching to a scaffold knot before next climb

I use a quicklink on my rappel line 40 ft of oplux tied with a scaffold knot. It is a bit annoying screwing/unscrewing and a bit noisy when doing it quickly. Still better than potentially crossloading a carabiner

I call that a Delta link, a quick link is oval in shape.
Not that it matters for this discussion, but
The delta link uses the exact same mechanical mechanism to secure the tether, and lends itself to the same problem

I use a delta link with a figure 8 knot. To stop the sound of screwing and unscrewing, I use a little odorless gun oil on the threads. Then I wrap the link in tesa tape for more sound deadening.

I was having issues with my rope twisting around itself. My delta link triangle came it today. Are there issues running a figure 8 on a bite v poachers knot or scaffolding knot?

The thoughts on the scaffold knot is it’s not as bulky as figure 8 on a bite. But I think the main reason is you can get that knot super tight so the delta link doesn’t want to flop around.

Question on topic... would tying a scaffolding knot with tether after its hitched around the tree work?
