A decision to not call it quits for the day turned out positive!

Well, it's been a semi frustrating turkey season, but I blame myself. I usually only hunt the couple of hours before work so it doesn't give me much time to work em if I need to, and I decided I'd go with the recurve. I got to within 40 yds. last Saturday with the bow. It was very frustrating. This morning I went out after first light and had this tom come in to about 20 yds. unlucky for him but lucky for me I took out the long gun this morning. Even at that range he would have been outside my comfortable shooting range with the recurve. The bow will be going out for the rest of the season now that the ice is broken.

That's been my season so far. I almost decided to take the Turkeyslayer today but I'm holding out for another bow bird.

Tagged out this morning during a snow storm! Strange weather around here yesterday and today, it was snowing like a blizzard as he was working in, that has never happened in my neck of the woods before!! Second bird in as many hunts. I even got a super late start this morning not leave my house until 7!! Great morning out, but coldest turkey hunt I've ever had by far!

Tagged out in WV this morning! About as perfect of a “roost” hunt as you can get! This particular tree has produced the last three years and is an awesome setup when you can catch one there. I set up at 5am this morning and at 5:20 I heard him drumming. At 5:40 he ripped a gobble and was right where I expected him to be. 38 yards on the limb. Luckily he was facing me so I was pretty sure he was going to pitch my direction but I gave him some real light tree yelps and he was on FIRE. He would gobble until he ran out of breath then do it again. Over and over and over lol. At 6:03 he hopped off the limb and landed 25 yards from me behind a brush pile. I eased the gun over just as he stepped out in full strut at 20 yards. Game over!! An awesome hunt!!

It hasn't been perfect for me. I've been going to my usual spot. 2 Saturdays ago, I was a bit far (I could see them strutting in the distance), but my calls were not playing nice even though I conditioned and tested them the day before. Last Saturday I did the opposite... Way too close, ended up bumping 3-4 birds off the roost.

Not sure if it's worth it to go there again or not.

It's always worth going! Switch up your tactics, don't try and get them of the roost. Wait for fly down, let them tell you the direction they are going get in front of em and subtly let them know you're there. Give em some yelps and cuts then shut up on them. Or if you can wait til even later in the morning, say 9ish, then go after em. Your more than likely not seeing the exact same birds, it could be but more than likely not, they'll roost in the same spot every couple of days, this time of year they are very nomadic searching for hot hens. Late mornings produce more gobbling activity in my neck of the woods. You could also wait for some bad weather or rain, be in the woods when the weather breaks, this can make for some crazy gobbling and I have had birds run to my calling! Keep at it and be flexible, just dont keep doing the same thing each time!! Good luck! Happy hunting!
