2022-2023 Duck Thread

Made a mad dash after my daughter's pig show for a quick afternoon hunt to close out the season. Sure made it worth it. Screenshot_20230212-205309_Gallery.jpg

I had the worst season I’ve ever had. The weather was so screwy. I actually stopped hunting and started crappie fishing. That proved to be a way better use of time.

Early teal. Deer hunting is fun, but not as fun as shooting 13 teal with your buddies. Heart racing, afraid to put the gun down....

Nice. We had a bit of a dud of a season this year. Birds never seemed to show. We hunted one time despite having super low expectations. Shot 2 birds. Hope that doesn't bode ill for duck season.

Water is going to be our issue even if we get cold weather. Freakin catfish are all covered in ticks right now cause the rivers are so low. Did a bunch of deer scouting on the river in areas I have never hunted, found some great stuff to hunt and now I am not sure I could even get my boat launched down there.

Low water actually helps us here where im at. . Annual flooding usually spreads ducks out. Low water means that if you can find overlooked backwater that hasn't dried up you'll find oodles of ducks.

Yep, one of my best duck seasons the lake I hunt was 10 feet below power pool. A lot of the backwater areas and farm ponds were dried up.

Right now the winds and tides have the tidal marshes full. The teal work the marsh between us and the bay. But they like the mud too. The silty stuff.

Dry winters make for easier hunting. Ponds and artificially flooded marshes are hot.

Wet fall/winter makes for tougher hunting but more fun areas to hunt. Flooded timber, oxbow sloughs, and high lakes (if the COE doesn't drop it all out of dams)

One of my favorite holes to hunt in a wet year is an oxbow slough that is half buck brush, half open water. The woodies and teal love it early, then the gadwall and mallards come around 9 to loaf in the buck brush all afternoon. Another fun hole we dubbed "The Teal Hole." A big 20-30 acre oxbow that holds thousands of teal in the early season. A buddy and I made a before work hunt one year and shot our 12 birds in 8 minutes flat.
